This side provides tasks to violence in the Northern Irish conflict, especially about the events in North Belfast/Ardoyne in June 2001 and in January 2002, when catholic school children were attacked on their school way.
The catholic school girls have to walk about 400 metres trough a protestant area to get to their catholic Primary school "Holy Cross".
But there is also another way to their school, through a catholic area, only some metres more far.
So the residents of the Ardoyne Road protested to prevent the children from walking through their area.
They say, the parents abuse the girls and that they only want annoy them.
The adults spit at the small children and insulted them.
Then the protestant even threw stones and petrol-bombs. One day such a bomb exploded and four police- men were hurt.
The children were protected by many police men and soldiers even out of the air.
The riots also continued during the night.
The proetests began on 19 June and lasted until 29 June.
It is very important to mention the special situation of North Belfast. Apart from other towns in Northern Ireland were Catholics and Protestans live strictly separated, here they live mixed up.
So in Ardoyne a lot of members of the IRA live, but there is also a enclave of Protestants, where are always many riots.
These riots around the school began some days earlier, when some Protestants wanted to hang up posters for the march of the Orange Order.
The Orange Society or Order was founded on september 22nd in 1795 after the "Battle of the Diamond" at Loughal near Portadown.
In this battle a british-protestant army defeated a troop of Irish Republicans. After this victory the order was founded and the members swore the British king to defend the Protestantism and the law.
In our days there are around 100000 members and one of their most important aims is the conservation of the union Northern Ireland`s with Great Britain and the fighting against a unification with the Irish Republic, what`s the wish of many Catholics.
Further they have a lot of influence on the politics of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), that is
the most important probritish and protestant party.
The name of this society goes back to William III of Oranien, who was king of England from 1689 till 1702. He conquered back Ireland to Great Britain, when he defeated Irish rebells and the catholic army of his predecessor.
The marches taking place every year, should remind of this battle.
The problem is that the original route, on which the society insists, goes through catholic areas. So every year there are many violent happenings although police trys to avoid them.
The Society protests against the prohibition to march through special catholic areas and the Catholic see in the marches a provocation.
So there were the protestants with their posters and while they hang them up, they were attacked by Catholics. The government wasn`t able to calm down the two sides and so it came to the blockade of the school.
The second blockation of this school began with the summer term in september and again endured some days.
And there was even and even a third blockation in January 2002.
The events at these blockades are all comparable to the first one.
