Set 1” Margins:

Page Setup
Margins: make sure all margins (Top, Bottom, Left, Right) are set at 1” [NOTE: usually the Top & Bottom margins are correct, but the Left & Right margins need to be changed from 1.25” to 1”]
Click OK when done to return to document
Set 12-Point Font:
Format
Font
Under Font tab: Set Font as a standard block font (such as Times New Roman), Font Style is “regular,” and Font Size is 12.
Clik OK when done to return to document
Double Space all text in the document:
Format
Paragraph
Under Indents & Spacing Tab: Spacing – Line Spacing: choose “Double” in the drop down box
Click OK when done to return to document
Format an MLA Research-Style Heading(top, left corner; double-spaced):

Instructor’s Name, with TitleInstructor Sharon Cronk-Raby
Due Date, with inverted date14 November 2009
Short description of work submittedNarrative Writing
Then, centered after the heading, before starting the paper, add a (creative) title (appropriately capitalized).
InsertPage Headers(when your document exceeds one page) (per MLA-style: top, right corner):
Insert
- Page Numbers
- Position: Top of Page (Header)
- Alignment: Right
- Check: show # on 1st page
- Click OK
In the Word Document, click the text box with the page number
(which is now in the top, right corner of your paper)
- Type your last name in the text box, using proper capitalization
- Right align your last name with the page # (Control R)
- Close header/footer box
Check Word Count:
highlight only the text to be counted
(only the body of the essay; do not include Heading, Title, or Works Cited)
(remember to meet the minimum word count of each essay!!!)
Tools
Word Count…
Click “Close” when done to return to document
Format the Works Cited Page:
Format
Paragraph
Indents & Spacing tab – Indentation section
- Special
- Choose “Hanging” from the drop down box
Click OK
As you now type your entries on your Works Cited page, everything will format correctly for you!

In the Word Document, click the header area next to the page number (to the left of the page number)
(which is now in the top, right corner of your paper)
- Type your last name to the left of the page number, using proper capitalization
- Add a space between your last name and the page number
- Click the cursor in the body of the document to remove the header line and return to the document
Check Word Count:
Highlight only the text to be counted
(only the body of the essay; do not include Heading, Title, or Works Cited)
At the bottom of the screen, find “Word Count”
- If you have your text highlighted, you will see 2 numbers:
- The first number tells you the number of words in the highlighted section (the number to use for your essays; remember to meet the minimum word count!!!)
- The second number tells you the word count of the entire document
Format the Works Cited Page:
Page Layout
Paragraph
Make sure the document is still set up for double spacing (as above)
In the “Indentation” section:
- Choose “Special”
- Choose “Hanging” from the drop down box
Click OK
As you now type your entries on your Works Cite page, everything will format correctly for you!
