SCHOOL-PARENT COMPACT

Keithley Middle School and the parents of the students participating in activities, services, and programs funded by Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), agree that this compact outlines how the parents, the entire school staff, and the students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership that will help children achieve the State’s high standards.

This school-parent compact is in effect during the 2016-2017 school year.

School Responsibilities

Keithley Middle School will:

1.  Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards as follows:

All students complete academic screening via curriculum based measures (CBM: Oral Reading Fluency and Math Computation) three times each year, in fall, winter, spring. Students in need of extra academic support are identified and placed appropriately in interventions.

All students have teachers that work in professional learning communities, analyzing data and constantly working to improve student learning. This system is monitored via academic “Checkpoint” meetings held every six weeks where teachers display student progress data, problem solve, and engage in professional inquiry centered on better performance.

Keithley also has advanced classes in Career and Technical Education (CTE) as well as Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) courses in math, English language arts, and social studies.

  1. Hold parent-teacher conferences (at least annually in elementary schools) during which this compact will be discussed as it relates to the individual child’s achievement. Specifically, those conferences will be held:

Student-led conferencing (SLC) occurs in the fall (October) and spring (May). Each student’s parent/guardian is invited to attend the conference and a series of interventions are in place to ensure students complete their SLC is completed, with the goal of 100%.

  1. Provide parents with frequent reports on their children’s progress. Specifically, the school will provide reports as follows:

Progress reports are distributed to students in advisory at mid-quarter checkpoints. Student academic progress is also readily available via online grades. Teachers are expected to also make contact home when/if students are struggling academically, behaviorally, or with attendance.

  1. Provide parents reasonable access to staff. Specifically, staff will be available for consultation with parents as follows:

School staff are available each day until 2:40pm, 45 minutes beyond the school day. Additionally, parents are invited to attend our fall (Back to School Night) and spring (Family Fun Night) events, as well as AVID nights, where they can interact with school staff and learn about our academic and extra-curricular offerings.

5.  Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom activities, as follows:

Keithley has a robust volunteer culture that invites the community into the school and classroom. We have an on-site volunteer coordinator to manage volunteer clearance and an instructional coach who places volunteers in the classroom. Any parent/guardian is welcome to observe in the classroom(s) of their student with 24-hour notice, as stipulated in the teacher’s contract.

Student Responsibilities

We, as students, will share the responsibility to improve our academic achievement and achieve the State’s high standards. Specifically, we will fully commit to PGK in the following ways:

·  I will arrive every day by 7:20 A.M. (Mon. - Fri.)

·  I will remain until 1:55 P.M. (Mon/Tues/Thurs./Fri.) and 12:25 P.M. (Early Release Weds.)

o  I will always work, think, and behave in the best way I know how and I will do whatever it takes for me and my fellow students to learn. This also means that I will complete all my homework every night, I will call or email my teachers if I have a problem with the homework or a problem with coming to school, and I will raise my hand and ask questions in class if I do not understand.

·  I will arrive on time to each class.

·  I will always make myself available to parents, staff, and respond to concerns they may have.

·  I will always behave so as to protect the safety, interests, and rights of all individuals in the classroom.

·  This also means that I will always listen to all my PGK peers and give everyone my respect.

·  I will follow the PGK Learning Ready Expectations and be prepared each day with my binder.

·  I will read at least 30 minutes every day outside of school time.

·  I will work to limit screen time and ensure I get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

·  Give to my parents or the adult who is responsible for my welfare all notices and information received by me from my school every day.

Parent Responsibilities

We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:

·  We will make sure our child arrives every day by 7:20 a.m. (Mon. - Fri.) and will monitor their attendance in Skyward.

·  We will make arrangements so our child can remain until 1:55 p.m. (Mon. - Fri.)

o  We will always help our child in the best way we know how and we will do whatever it takes for him/her to learn. This also means that we will check and help organize our child's binder and planner every night, let him/her email the teacher if there is a problem with the homework, monitor their grades in Online Grades and try to read with him/her every night, and limit the amount of television they watch.

·  We will always make ourselves available to our children, the school, and any concerns they may have.

·  This also means that if our child is going to miss school, we will notify the school as soon as possible.

·  We will read carefully all the papers that the school sends home to us.

·  We will promote positive use of my child’s extracurricular time, encourage them to attend after school program and allow them to go on PGK field trips.

·  We will make sure our child follows the PGK Learning Ready Expectations and is in possession of a binder and learning ready school supplies each day.

·  We understand that our child must follow the PGK rules so as to protect the safety, interests, and rights of all individuals in the classroom.

·  We will work to limit our student’s screen time and ensure they get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.

·  We will make every effort to join and/or follow the activity of the PTSA.
