Membership Scholarship:

The intent of this scholarship is to recruit NEW regular (RNs working in oncology or with an interest in oncology) members to ONS and NEWONS.

This scholarship is for a full two- year membership to ONS and NEWONS.

Applications are available on the NEWONS website, ( They may be distributed to NEWONS area oncology worksites if approved by the management at those sites.

Scholarships will be awarded at least quarterly after committee review (usually in association with scheduled board meetings) but may be considered on a first-come, first-served basis to eligible and qualified candidates by committee action at any time until the annual allotted number (five) is disbursed. Applications will be reviewed by the NEWONS board or by a panel consisting of the grants and reimbursement chair (or designee) and at least 2 board members. The reviewers will select applicants based upon review of the application, the quality of the essay, and determination of meeting the criteria.

The grants and reimbursement chair (or designee) will inform the President and the applicant of the panel decision.

If the employer pays the fees in full, one is not eligible. Fees will not be payed directly to recipient; rather the awardee will submit the completed membership application (s) to the treasurer who will write a check for payment directly to ONS/NEWONS or for the remainder of the fee if an employer pays partial fees.

Recipients will not be eligible for both the membership and the certification scholarships in the same year.

Preference will be given to (in descending order): recent RN graduates who are working in an oncology setting or have an interest inoncology,; established RNs new to or returning to oncology; or with an interest in oncology ;veteran oncology nurses who have never belonged to ONS. If applicants have previously belonged to ONS, at least two years must have lapsed since active membership.

Recipients must agree to serve on a committee or on the newsletter team for at least one of the two-year membership years awarded.

The scholarship committee may elect to not distribute all of the scholarships if there are not enough eligible/qualified candidates.

Recipients of this scholarship will not be eligible for this scholarship in subsequent years (e.g. after a lapse in oncology practice and a return). This is a one-time award.
