Kathleen Snooks was elected by the Board to serve as the next Board Chair and Berty Riley was elected to serve as the Vice Chair. This is a one-year term.

“Behind the Scenes” Hero Awards were presented to Cynthia Robino, School-to-Work Coordinator, and Curtis Dixon, Director of Student Services, by Dr. Washington for going beyond the call of duty.

Dr. Washington recognized the following parents who serve on the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Group: Detera Beaton, Biner Lawyer, Cathy Morgan, Gladys Williams, Ransom Dunham, Jeannette Dunham, Priscilla Green, Edith Badger and Alfred Badger. These parents will be meeting on a regular basis with the Superintendent to share concerns. etc.

Dr. Washington also recognized the recent accomplishments of our schools athletic teams. She shared that The Harmonizing Hurricanes, three high school students from Hardeeville High School, have been selected to perform at the South Carolina School Boards Associations’ Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach in February 2011.

Two local churches presented donations to the school district to purchase classroom libraries for the Hardeeville School Campus: St. Stephen A.M.E. Church ($500) and St. Paul A.M.E. Church ($250). Dr. Washington stated that even though we have books in the media centers for the students she would like to see each classroom with a personal library of books that are on the students’ levels. The challenge went out to other churches and non-profit organizations who might like to make a contribution.

A special presentation was made by Ingrid Scott, District-Based Instructional Coach, on the ePortfolio Documentation for Certified Staff. Each teacher is required to take a technology proficiency assessment to see what level they are on. Teachers scoring 80% or higher are placed on a mastery portfolio and those scoring below 80% are placed on a developing portfolio. 144 teachers in the District have reached the mastery level and 93 teachers are on the developing level. There are some new teachers that still have not gone through the assessment process.

A second presentation was made by Eleanor Hazel, Parent Liaison/Testing Coordinator/Lead Counselor, on the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Parents can keep tabs on their child’s progress on a weekly basis without having to wait for progress reports or report cards to come out. Teachers need to make sure that they are updating this information on a weekly basis.
