POSITION DESCRIPTION

Family Intervention Worker

Cassowary Coast Family Intervention Service

PURPOSE

The Family Intervention Worker provides in home family support to families referred by Department of Child Safety, to assist them to appropriately care for and protect their children. The Worker provides psycho/social education and practical assistance in relation to family capacity building. The aim of the role is to assist families to meet their case plan goals in order to ensure preservation or reunification of the family unit.

SCOPE

The position will provide intensive in-home family support on focus areas identified in Child Safety case plans.

The position is based at the Community Support Centre Innisfail and will include regular travel throughout the Cassowary Coast to meet client and organisational needs. A work vehicle will be provided for this travel.

Flexible hours of service provision with families, including evening, early mornings and

weekends will be occasionally required for engagement and as determined by case plans.

Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) arrangements apply for hours worked outside of nominated hours.

DUTIES

Work collaboratively and in partnership with Child Safety Service Centres, families, informal supports and other formal support services

Provide intensive, goal directed, emotional and practical support and education that promotes improved parenting skills with identified families

Deliver skill development for parents to effectively manage household tasks and routines including cooking, cleaning, budgeting; and personal behavior management that will provide for a safe and quality standard of care for children and young people

Within a family strengths practice and evidence framework provide support to families that results in definable and measurable change in family safety and wellbeing, parent strengths, attitudes, behavior, skills, knowledge and ability

Provide relevant and appropriate intervention for families by using a combination of one-on-one support, in-home support, centre-based support, and groupwork

When it is identified in a case plan, provide purposeful supervised contact between families and children particularly to observe and support strengthened parent-child attachments

Identify, implement, refer to, and coordinate family connections to resources, other specialist and universal services that will improve parenting ability and overall functioning for families

Participate in, and inform Case Planning and Case Plan reviews that are coordinated by Child Safety Services

Ensure all assessments, referrals and support strategies are conducted to relevant standardsand compliant with legislation, organisational policies, funding guidelines and culturallyappropriate models

Maintain adequate and appropriate client records, statistics, and reports where necessary

Participate in regular supervision with the Centre Manager and attend staff meetings as required

Develop and maintain professional knowledge and skills and be actively informed of relevant legislation, policies and contracts that may impact upon service delivery

Work cooperatively as a member of the CSCI team to achieve the smooth and effective functioning of the Service and the achievement of organisational goals

Essential Requirements

  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in Social/Behavioral Sciences
  • Possession of an open driver’s license
  • Possession of, or ability to acquire a ‘Working with Children’ Suitability card
  1. Experience in working with families who have multiple and complex needs including

knowledge of key child protection issues such as trauma, domestic violence and drug and

alcohol misuse

  1. Demonstrated engagement and motivational skills including capacity to engage with reluctant clients in a respectful and non-threatening manner that promotes dignity and encourages self determination
  1. Demonstrated ability to undertake risk assessments relating to family functioning and risk within households
  1. Demonstrated ability to impart knowledge and skills regarding household and child management, using a range of theoretical frameworks in a creative and flexible way
  1. Knowledge of and understanding of the issues that impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary society and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Indigenous people
  1. Knowledge of and ability to work collaboratively with other government and nongovernmentagencies
  1. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written including high computer literacy skills
  1. Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team environment as well as independently
