“The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.” (Tertullian, “Apology”, 50,12) 121 Chinese Martyrs have been canonised. They are:

Among these martyrs, there were 87 Chinese and 34 foreign missionaries. They ranged in age from 7 to 79. There were 76 lay people [including 2 catechumens], 8 seminarians, 7 religious sisters, 24 priests and 6 bishops. They were martyred between 1648 and 1930 in Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei, and Guangdong.

There are also 5 Chinese Blessed. One is Maurice Tornay, C.R.B., a priest martyred in Tibet. The others are Odoricus de Pordenone, O.F.M., Priest, John-Martin Moye, M.E.P., Priest, Mary Assunta Pallotta, F.M.M., and Joseph Freinademetz, S.V.D., Priest. They have served the people of God with sanctity and zeal.

Further, there are two overseas Chinese Martyr Saints: Anthony Cheng (Chinese-Japanese) and Laurence Ruiz (Chinese-Filipino), both were martyred in Japan.
