Groundhog Day

This movie screams out what is the meaning of life?

And how can I get out of this rut in life I am in?

These questions have been asked for centuries. Lets look at one of the examples in the bible.

King Solomon asked this very question in the Ecclesiastes, but before we get to that it is important to know who Solomon was?

1st Kings 3:5-14

We find in this passage that Solomon was the wisest man to ever walk the Earth. He is responsible for many of verses in Proverbs. Let’s see what he has to say about life.

Ecclesiastes 1:2, 1:14,

What are some things that Phil does that are meaningless?

Let’s look at some things that Solomon says are meaningless?

Ecclesiastes

2:1-11 Pleasures

2:12-16 Wisdom and Folly

2:17-23 Toil

5:10 Money and Riches

When does Phil’s life start to change, not at the ending, but during some of his reoccurring days? What does he do differently?

Let’s see when Solomon starts to find meaning as he looks at things differently?

Ecclesiastes

7:9 Do not be quick to anger

7:12 Wisdom preserves life

7:14 Good times or bad times be happy, no one knows the future

7:20 No one is righteous and without sin

7:21-22 Do not worry about what everyone else says

8:7-8 No man knows the future do not worry

At the end of the movie Phil and Rita appear to be off to live a full life. Let’s see what Solomon tells us on how we can live a full life.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Okay what does that mean?

Respect God and keep his wishes, this is our mission in life, God will judge everything we do good or bad.

Solomon gives us one other piece of advise in Ecclesiastes 11:9

9 Be happy, young man, while you are young,
and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth.
Follow the ways of your heart
and whatever your eyes see,
but know that for all these things
God will bring you to judgment.

Here are a few other thoughts:

Proverbs 4 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

Proverbs 19 21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails.

Psalm 33 10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. 11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations

James 3 13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

Psalm 119 37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things;
preserve my life according to your word.

Proverbs 22 4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life.

Jeremiah 23 20 …the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly.

Mark 8 25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

Acts 5 38Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."
