The SLLF Language Centre Programmes make an important contribution to Queen Mary’s international recruitment strategy and represent a major source of income. The post-holder will contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching, scholarly activity and administration in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Film, managing delivery of the assigned programme or programmes and contributing strategically towards the promotion, development and enhancement of the programme(s). The post-holder will also be responsible for the design, implementation, and quality of the programme(s), which includes the assessment processes, supervision and development of teaching staff, and liaison with internal and external academic and non-academic stakeholders. In addition, the post-holder will make a leading contribution to the long-term development of the programme(s) to ensure that it is appropriately positioned in the market. In the first instance, it is expected that the postholder will convene the programmes pre-Masters Graduate Diploma programmes offered in the School.
The postholder will be expected to make innovations in key aspects of teaching and learning, including the design of materials, new courses and/or options.
This post contains no research element, although the postholder is expected to keep up-to-date with developments in the field of language teaching pedagogy.

Qualifications / 1.  Bachelor’s degree.
2.  Recognised professional qualification in English language teaching to adults (UCLES DELTA or equivalent level).
3.  Master’s degree (in ELT, Applied Linguistics or related field).
4.  PhD or professional doctorate in ELT, Applied Linguistics or related field, or equivalent practitioner experience.

Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Role (main duties, knowledge of special working practices, breadth of management skill required, customer impact, responsibility, efficiency)
Administrative and Management
1.  To manage delivery of one or more programmes within the Language Centre as assigned by the relevant Co-ordinator of Programmes.
2.  To manage a range of contributions to the learning and teaching strategy of the assigned programme(s) and the Language Centre, including, (in line with QMUL and accrediting body criteria as appropriate): programme promotion, student placement, timetabling, room booking, record-keeping, curriculum design, programme amendments, deployment of teaching staff, assessment, quality review, liaison with external examiners and representation of the programme at exam boards.
3.  Develop and promote the School’s learning resources, and coordinate and ensure the integration of e-learning into the School’s programmes.
4.  To take an active part in the admission and recruitment of students to the assigned programme(s) as required.
5.  Take responsibility for a particular area of administration as agreed with the Head of School (such areas to be focussed on student learning, development and support).
6.  To manage lateral and hierarchical relationships internal to the Language Centre, QMUL and School, and external.
7.  To plan and participate in the recruitment, induction, and development of teaching staff.
8.  To lead, manage, and develop the teaching team, and student learning, throughout the assigned programme(s).
9.  To manage the assigned programme(s) within budgetary constraints.
10.  To supervise appraisal of teaching staff in line with Queen Mary procedures.
11.  To participate in departmental, School and QMUL meetings and activities as required.
Teaching
1.  Organise and undertake teaching in the School as agreed with the Co-ordinator of Programmes and Chair/Director of the Language Centre; this includes providing lectures, classes and seminars, in a variety of combinations.
2.  Contribute to innovations in teaching and learning through the development of teaching materials, of novel forms of pedagogy, or of appropriate teaching collaborations.
3.  To engage with relevant research and scholarship as necessary, to ensure the incorporation of up-to-date thinking and practice in the field.
4.  To contribute teaching normally equivalent to up to 10 hours teaching per week over 24 weeks.

To take overall responsibility for decision-making on all aspects of the assigned programme(s) in liaison with the Co-ordinator of Programmes and Chair/Director of the Language Centre.
Communication & Networking (liaison with others, type and level of communications)
1.  To assist the Co-ordinator of Programmes and the Chair/Director of the Language Centre to establish and coordinate relationships with key stakeholders both within and external to QMUL, e.g.:
a.  Destination academic departments within QMUL
b.  Agencies, overseas offices, embassies, external accreditation bodies and educational institutions external to QMUL.
c.  Professional Service departments, such as the International Office, the Admissions Office, the Timetabling Team, the Advice and Counselling Service, AV Bookings, Residential Services, the Multimedia Resources Manager of the Language Centre and Library Services.
d.  Language Centre managers and SLLF administrative team
2.  To work with Language Centre teachers in a management, supervisory and consultative capacity.
