Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Announcements/ABC Sunday

Opening Hymn “Together We Serve” FWS #2175

Call to Worship BOW #450

Leader: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in

it.

All: This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of

heaven.

Leader: The hour is coming, and now is, when true worshipers will worship

the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship

him.

All: Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him, bless his name!

(THE BOOK OF WORSHIP 1965, ALT.)

Hymn of Praise “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross” UMH #301

Prayer of Confession BOW #486

O Lord God, the watchers of Zion have called peace, peace, when there was no peace.

Wherefore have you so long withheld from us the influence of your Holy Spirit?

Why have you hardened our hearts?

It is because we have honored you with our lips, when our hearts were far from you.

Return again to us, O Lord God, and pardon this iniquity of your servants.

Cause your face to shine upon us, and we shall be saved.

O visit us with your salvation.

Raise up sons and daughters from Abraham and Sarah, and grant that there might come a mighty shaking of dry bones among us, and a great ingathering of souls.

Be pleased to grant that the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ may be built up; that all nations and kindreds and tongues and peoples might be brought to the knowledge of the truth, and we at last meet around your throne, and join in celebrating your praises. Amen.

(MARIA STEWARD, AFRICAN AMERICAN, U.S.A., 19TH CENT., ALT.)

(All offer prayers of confession in silence.)

Words of Assurance

The Lord God is merciful and gracious, endlessly patient, loving, and true, showing mercy to thousands, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin, and granting pardon. Amen.

Today’s Scripture

(CEB)

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

1We don’t need to write to you about the timing and dates, brothers and sisters. 2You know very well that the day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night. 3When they are saying, “There is peace and security,” at that time sudden destruction will attack them, like labor pains start with a pregnant woman, and they definitely won’t escape. 4But you aren’t in darkness, brothers and sisters, so the day won’t catch you by surprise like a thief. 5All of you are children of light and children of the day. We don’t belong to night or darkness. 6So then, let’s not sleep like the others, but let’s stay awake and stay sober. 7People who sleep sleep at night, and people who get drunk get drunk at night. 8Since we belong to the day, let’s stay sober, wearing faithfulness and love as a piece of armor that protects our body and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9God didn’t intend for us to suffer his wrath but rather to possess salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10Jesus died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with him. 11So continue encouraging each other and building each other up, just like you are doing already.
