Interview with: Gavin Reilly

Interview by: Sandra Brown

Following: QOS 6-0 Home League win Against Arbroath

SB: Gavin, many congratulations on your hat-trick this afternoon.

GR: Thank you, it was good to get my first hat trick for the club. In the first half I missed a couple of chances and thought it was going to be one of those days but I kept plugging away and was rewarded for it with a hat trick.

SB: You’re coming into the team this season, you’re getting that opportunity. Is it because you’re getting more regular games that you’re feeling a bit more confident?

GR: I do, yeah – the more you play, the more you get confident… scoring goals, especially as a striker, that’s bread and butter – you get your confidence from there. So hopefully if I keep scoring the goals and chappin on the gaffer’s door, I’ll hopefully get more regular starts.

SB: and of course there’s a lot of competition within that striker’s area at the moment

GR: yeah, there is. Nicky Clarke scored today and Kevin Smith came off the bench and also Derek Lyle’s been scoring goals. It’s good to have competition within the squad, it keeps all the strikers on their toes – wanting to train well and play well so they’re starting.

SB: talk me through your three goals. Do you remember much about them?

GR: well, the first one, the header’s came in and it’s flicked on but I’ve just got a touch on it – I’m there where all strikers should be: in the box. The second one’s come across and I’m just thinking I’ve got to get contact on it to get it in, and it’s went in. The third one, I’ve just tried to get it on target and luckily it’s went in.

SB: the young players – you’ve been around the set up for a wee while now – but the youngsters are getting their opportunity this season

GR: everywhere in Scottish football is the same: the money’s not there to bring in the big, older players so the young boys have got a good opportunity. So if they stick in and work hard there’s every opportunity for them to play.

SB: and, of course, with you grabbing the hat trick this afternoon, the other ones watching on will see that you are getting a chance

GR: there is, yeah. I just don’t want to get too far ahead of myself and say I’ll be starting every week. I just need to keep working hard and hopefully I can be consistent and score goals week in, week out and it gives me every opportunity to be playing.

SB: and what about the atmosphere at the moment, within the whole team, with the confidence and the results… I guess that dressing room’s a nice place to be

GR: it is, yeah. There’s a good togetherness between the lads and also, you can see it in the stands – there’s more atmosphere than there was last season; there’s a good buzz about the club as a whole

SB: so: thoroughly enjoying the season so far?

GR: I am, yes. Best week of my life. I scored against Hibs on Tuesday night and then getting my first hat-trick for the club here on Saturday. It’s been a great week.

SB: there’s obviously been that Hibs game; the performance in the Hibs game and then the performance today – so it’s not just about finishing, there’s quality throughout the whole team

GR: yeah, the defence is solid. We’ve not lost any goals in the last five or six games and then we’re scoring them at the other end. So, as a whole, we’re a tight unit at the moment and we’re doing well, so hopefully we can push on to get promotion.
