14.General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
The Registered Nurse (RN) position requires advanced clinical decision-making skills and judgment. The RN is a member of the interdisciplinary health care team. He/she provides direct patient care on all units of the health center/c-unit. The RN is expected to initiated and sustain life saving care and measures as appropriate, as well as perform the full range of clinical nursing duties. The complexity of the work exceeds written, established methods and procedures often available and, therefore, the RN is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action. Documents appropriately in Electronic Health Record (EHR). The RN functions with minimal supervision in the provision of total care. He/she will function as Charge Nurse having responsibility for prisoners medical care and staff accountability on the unit. The job requires daily contact with prisoners whose security levels will range minimum. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol screening. Actively participates in meetings and sub committees.

Duty 1
General Summary of Duty 1% of Time80%
  • The RN provides total nursing care to all assigned prisoners on the designated units and shift.
  • This includes utilization of the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, report.
  • Documents the care given, using the EHR.
  • He/she is fully accountable for the provision of care according to established policies, procedures, standards and protocols.
  • He/she is responsible for contacting medical providers in conjunction with House Supervisor or other health care providers to report changes in prisoners condition or response to treatment, and obtain orders as necessary.
  • Serves as a preceptor for orientees upon request.
  • Draws blood, prepares and obtain laboratory specimens.
  • Performs routine lab test, i.e., hemoccult slides, dipstick urinalysis.
  • Starts and maintains IV lines, provides wound care, venipuncture, EKG’s intradermal TB test, ect.
  • Inventories supplies, initiates the ordering of supplies and equipment.
  • Participates in all institutional security procedures.
  • Keep nurse managers apprised of changes in prisoners condition, unit needs and relevant staff issues.

  • As a senior level RN, is responsible for the total health care of prisoner, and for establishing a therapeutic relationship with an assigned caseload of acutely or chronically ill prisoners.
  • Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates care for each assigned patient.
  • Makes appropriately and timely referrals, following the admission assessment, based on professional nursing judgment and knowledge of scientific principles.
  • Provides ongoing individualized prisoner education.
  • Obtains and shares information from other care providers, as appropriate, i.e., MP’s, dietitians, therapists, and social workers.

  • Completes a variety of documents and forms used in the clinical complex, DWH, or the specific nursing unit.
  • Completes necessary documents and reports in a timely and professional manner.
  • Conducts or attends in-service training programs and maintains professional knowledge base.
  • Attends staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in the provision of care and participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Functions as resource person for other staff as necessary and as prisoner advocate.

Routine decisions on nursing care associated with active diagnoses and procedures. Decisions which promote the safety of staff and prisoners and which ensures the security of the institutions. Approved methods and as appropriate, past precedent, for accomplishing objectives, whether emergent or routine.

Lifting up to 40 lbs (15%), pushing a cart (10%), bending (5%), walking (20%), reaching and standing (20%), sitting while charting (25%), stooping (5%), in contact with prisoners 100% of the time while on duty.

22.What are the essential functions of this position?
Nursing care which includes complete physical assessment, development of nursing (patient) care plan, implementation and evaluation of the plan. Throughout this process, the prisoner is monitored and supervised to anticipate and prevent complications and/or any preventable untoward event.

The prisoner populations have increased in size and the complexity of services offered. The federal actions against the state mandate and sometimes exceed contemporary private standards of care.
24.What is the function of the work area and how does this position fit into that function?
The health care units provide Inpatient health care services to MDOC prisoners. The RN position carries out the functions of those services, as detailed in the components of the Position Description.
25.What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position?
EDUCATION:
Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Nursing.
EXPERIENCE:
One year (2080 hrs.) of relevant clinical nursing experience which shall have been acquired with the past two years and which shall have been in an acute care hospital, correctional, mental health, or public health agency or two or more years (4000 +hour.) clinical nursing which shall have been acquired within the previous five years.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The employee must have thorough knowledge and skills in the current practice of clinical nursing. He/she must have the self-confidence to make decisions with minimal supervision, and must be able to treat prisoner patients in a professional nonjudgmental manner.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Michigan Licensure as a Registered Nurse.
