October 2014

This email is to update you on the City of Charlotte Myrtle/Morehead Drainage project. It has been in the Planning and Design Phases for a while and is quickly proceeding into the Construction Phase.

Sanders Utility Construction Co., Inc. is the General Contractor and will be performing most of the work and is responsible for all of the work. Currently they are busy scheduling for beginning the actual construction. On their team is a subcontractor, Vibratech Inc., who has already begun to document existing conditions of all buildings and roadways. This is very important to the City and is a contract requirement which is intended to document conditions prior to construction.

This construction project extends along Baxter, McDowell, Morehead and Oriole. Construction Signs are already being placed. Some project stakeout/surveying has begun. Within two weeks, the Contractor will begin along Baxter. The first thing will be to place a temporary construction fence in the Kidney Dialysis Center and Wray Ward parking area, which will enclose the actual excavation area. That will be followed by moving in equipment and then next the actual excavation is scheduled to begin. Since the construction area is small, the excavated dirt material will be trucked away and materials brought in as needed. Safety for all is important, motorist in this area are reminded to be alert to changing driving/parking patterns and these additional hauling and service vehicles.

In about a month, some exploration work will also be scheduled along Morehead to investigate the existing 54” water line so materials can be ordered for replacing approximately 80 ft. This exploration work will be completed over the weekend. Some lanes will be closed and through traffic will be directed by construction signs around the work.

In about a month, Oriole St. will be closed at Morehead to through traffic. The Contractor will dig a shaft in the street at this location to construct a tunnel for a 90” Concrete Drain Pipe to cross Morehead. By tunneling under Morehead, it will remain open for the majority of this work. This tunnel work will continue through the winter and be completed early spring. The construction along Oriole Street will be later. Motorist in this area are also reminded to be alert to changing traffic patterns and construction workers.

Please be aware that there are many things that effect the construction schedule. Weather is a large factor. Material production and delivery is sometime delayed. Utility conflicts have been addressed, but additional conflicts are sometime out of the Contractor’s control.

Campo and Associates are administering the contract for the City of Charlotte I am the Construction Manager and Charlie Coley is the project inspector. Generally, I will be on the project weekly. Generally, Charlie will be on the project whenever the Contractor is working. Since some of the project will be around the clock, we will have other inspectors as needed.
