Presenter: Dr. Amanda Eaton Ph.D. CCC-SLP

Amanda (Alton) Eaton, Ph.D. CCC-SLP is an assistant professor in Communication Disorders at Fontbonne University. She received a doctorate in psychology with an emphasis in behavioral neuroscience. Her research predominantly focuses on aphasia pathophysiology and recovery, electrophysiology and right hemisphere language processes, and cognitive rehabilitation. Amanda worked as a speech language pathologist in adult acute and sub-acute care and currently teaches courses in dysphagia, motor speech disorders, voice pathology, research methods, and neurogenic communication disorders. She recently co-founded the Group Rehabilitation for Aphasia Communication Effectiveness (G.R.A.C.E.) program at the Eardley Family Clinic for Speech, Language and Hearing which provides group therapy for adults with aphasia in the St. Louis region.

Presenter: Dr. Carmen Russell Ph.D. CCC-SLP

Carmen Russell, PhD CCC-SLP, is a professor at Fontbonne University and is chairperson of the department of Communication Disorders and Deaf Education. She received her doctorate of communication sciences and disorders at the University of Missouri – Columbia and specializes in adult neurogenic communication and cognitive disorders. She is founder and director of the Aphasia Boot Camp, an intensive therapy experience for people with chronic aphasia, at the Eardley Family Clinic for Speech, Language, and Hearing at Fontbonne University.

Overview

Dr. Amanda Eaton, Ph.D. CCC-SLP and Dr. Carmen Russell, Ph.D. CCC-SLP, professors at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, will be presenting for the duration of the conference. Throughout the course of the evening, Drs. Eaton and Russell will discuss the benefits of the Group Aphasia Therapy model and the Intensive Aphasia Therapy Model, and how to identify appropriate candidates. They will also describe how to design effective activities for home exercise programming to maximize aphasia recovery. This information will be relevant to the practice of Speech-Language Pathologists in a variety of settings, as well as OT, PT, and other health care professionals.

Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-language pathology and audiology. Participants will be able to:

1. Explain the benefits of Intensive Aphasia Therapy model and identify people with aphasia who would benefit from intensive aphasia therapy

2. Explain the benefits of Group Aphasia Therapy model and identify people with aphasia who would benefit from group therapy

3. Explain the importance of community and social support in the aphasia recovery process.

4. Describe the importance of independent and regular practice to maximize aphasia recovery.

5. Describe and design effective activities for home programming to maximize aphasia recovery.
