CLASS BASED PORTFOLIO TASK

This class-based portfolio task will be the 1st of 4 portfolio items which you are required to do for SAE 1 (Standard Assessment Event) The 1st task requires you to do the following:-

·  Analyse statistical data

·  Extract and summarise information from prescribed source materials

·  Analyse and evaluate texts

·  Answer questions based on specified sources

·  Develop an understanding of a range of perspectives on the issue of the high rate of young people involved in car accidents.

·  Write a brief report which describes the issue and the impact of this issue on Australian society

·  Write a bibliography

The tasks are based on the 5 texts related to young people and car accidents in Australia which are in a separate document on Wikispace (www.begatafetpc.wikispaces.com). The preparation for this task will be done as a group as part of the Humanities class sessions in the 1st 3 weeks, and each student will then write their own brief report on the issue.

TASK 1:

Summarise each article/text, writing down the main idea of each paragraph (if appropriate to the particular text) and the main supporting information, as well as any notes.

When summarising, remember to:

1. Read the title

2. Check pictures, graphs and diagrams to predict the purpose and content

3. Notice how the text is organised

4. Skim the text to read topic headings

5. Read the introduction or first paragraph

6. Highlight main points and anything else important

7. Finally, carefully read the sections of the text that are relevant to your topic and take separate notes as you read. (Use the template below)

The notes are any information that you would write down while reading the texts, to help you write your report eg

What ideas did you have about your report/assignment when you read that information?

How do you think you could use this information in your assignment?

What do I need to follow up to get better understanding?

Task 2:

Write a brief analysis and evaluation of each text, including the following information. The evaluation should be written as at least 1 paragraph (not in point form) with the name, date and author of the text accurately written at the beginning. (Word Count : 100 – 250 depending on text)

·  Indicate the intended audience

·  Identify the research methods (if applicable)

·  Identify the type of text

·  Discuss the reliability of the text

·  Highlight any special features of the text that were unique or helpful (charts, graphs etc.)

·  Discuss the relevance or usefulness of the text for your research

·  Point out in what way the text relates to themes or concepts in your course

·  State the strengths and limitations of the text

·  Present your view or reaction to the text

Task 3

Write a reference list or bibliography using the 7 texts, following the guidelines of the Harvard referencing System. (Reference lists and bibliographies go on a separate page at the end of an essay/report.)

v  A bibliography refers to both textual references and other works which may have informed your thinking but which may not have been explicitly cited. If you have done any further reading on the issue yourself, then include these in your bibliography.

v  A reference list includes only works cited in the text, so if you did not do any further reading, then write a reference list.

v  Both bibliographies and references lists are alphabetical.

v  The way that you record reference details in your bibliography will depend on the source of the information

v  When using online materials, direct readers as closely as possible to the information being cited; whenever possible, reference specific documents rather than home or menu pages
