Multi-Genre Research Project

Name ______

This assignment will allow you to use research to complete a multi-genre research project. For this project, you select a famous person who demonstrates perseverance.

Sources of Information:

You must cite in your project at least 8 different sources of information. Keep your eyes open for films, television programs, magazine and newspaper articles, websites, and books about your topic. We will go over the correct MLA format for your work cited page. Most of your information should be found utilizing Cobb Virtual Library.

Notes:

As you research, you are required to keep notes organized on note and source cards by references. All of your notes should be neatly written and effectively organized so that you can cite correct sources. Don’t discard any of your notes!

Topics:

You are to select a famous person who demonstrates perseverance in his/her life. You are to research this person while staying focused on perseverance. (HINT: THIS IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR WORK.) Your research is not designed to be a biography of the person’s entire life.

Creating Your Genre:

Think about interesting ways you can present this information besides an essay. You will need to have your research in class every day so that you can work as time is given. You will also be required to do some of your work at home.

Below is a list of genres. Each genre provides you with a choice of assignments. Remember, this is a writing assignment so your work should be text-heavy. You must also focus on ways in which your person represents perseverance.

I. Creative—Pick 1 / III. Technical—Pick 1—Each of these may not be appropriate for each person being researched. Select carefully.

II. 3 paragraphs / IV. Response Pieces—Pick 1–Responses must be between your person and an important person in his/her life. You must remember to focus on perseverance.
A researched article about your chosen person that is supported using internal citation and a thesis. / Emails
Love Letters
V. Final Assessment—Required
Commencement Address—You are to give a commencement address as if you are the person you researched. It should be appropriate for those who are embarking on the next stage of their lives. Remember, it should also focus on the theme of perseverance. 5 minutes long. Have two copies when you come to school to present. One is for you to use, and one is for you to turn in before giving your speech. You may want to dress as your person.

Special Reminders:

Plagiarism—This must be your own writing! You cannot cut and paste information from websites, etc. in your paper. This is your research and your own ideas. If you copy words from others, you will either be written up or given a zero.

Not Enough Writing—This is a writing assignment, and although, some of the genres are not text based, you should make sure that you add well-written explanations to your work.

Grading:

This project will carry over multiple weeks, and will count as a major grade. Remember, this is a WRITING assignment so your work should contain proper grammar, spelling, and mechanics as well as written clearly utilizing things you know about writing.
