1. The duty to report and inform
The candidate and the supervisor shall have regular contact. They mutually obligate themselves to keep one another appraised of all circumstances relevant to the supervisory process. The parties commit themselves to investigate conditions that may prevent the supervision being conducted according to the applicable rights and duties.
2. The supervisors shall/commits to:
· Remain informed of the progress of the candidate's work and evaluate it in relation to the project's plan of progress.
· Investigate any condition that may delay the completion of the program and thus endeavor to keep the program on schedule.
· Advise on the formulation and limits of themes and research questions
· Help with orientation in the academic literature and empirical base (libraries, archives, etc.)
· Discuss and evaluate hypotheses and methods
· Discuss results and their interpretation
· Discuss the preparation and completion of presentation (outline, literary form, documentation etc.)
· Supervise the candidate on questions of research ethics relevant to the project.
· Ensure that the candidate participates in an active research community, that the candidate is involved in research seminars or otherwise can present their work-in-progress and assist in introducing the candidate to relevant external communities.
· Submit annual reports on the candidate's progress within the PhD program. (Frequency of contact shall be recorded in the progress report).
· Support in managing and reporting issues of personal privacy, see the guidelines of the Norwegian Social Science Data Services (NSD) http://www.nsd.uib.no/nsd/english/index.html, and follow the ethics guidelines for supervisors http://www.uio.no/english/for-employees/support/human-resources/ethical-guidelines/index.html.
· Discuss with the candidate beforehand if the supervisor wishes to co-author an article in the thesis, and
· Support the candidate by informing the relevant department when the thesis is nearly ready for submission, with a view to preparing an examinations committee.
3. The PhD candidate shall:
· Submit reports or drafts of sections of the thesis to the supervisor once every six months/year in accordance with what has been agreed at the time of admission. Sections of the thesis may be submitted in connection with seminars,
· Annually submit progress reports to their department according to the relevant agreements,
· Observe the research ethics principles relevant to their discipline (link to the research ethic principles on the main page for PhD education), and that personal privacy issues are reported and treated as they should be (see the link under the supervisor's duties), and
· Declare the University of Oslo as their place of research on the publication of their doctoral thesis or academic articles that are a part of it, if the candidate has or has had UiO as their workplace during their PhD education. If publication takes place after the admission period is completed and while the candidate is employed elsewhere then the candidate should employ so-called double-addressing.
· Produce two summaries of the thesis: one media notice in Norwegian and an academic abstract in English aimed at international research colleagues.

The total supervision is normally 180 hours, including preparation.
If an assistant supervisor is appointed, there should be a separate agreement on the division of supervising hours between the principal and the assistant supervisor.
Both parties in the supervisory relationship are entitled to regular contact and information about the progress of the work.
If a doctoral candidate or a supervisor has the opinion that the other party does not fulfil his/her obligations, or the supervisory relationship becomes unsatisfactory, it is his or her duty to take it up with the other party, and together try to find a solution to the problem. If no solution is found, the supervisor may on such grounds ask to be released from the supervision agreement, or the doctoral candidate may request that the new supervisor be appointed. Such requests shall go trough and be settled by the Department.
Annual report
The candidate is obliged to submit annual reports on the progress within the PhD program. Further details about annual reporting will be provided by the department administration.
