Icarus Fire Procedures – During a performance or event

Responsibilities:

Stage Manager

  • Cue house lights up
  • Give the evacuation speech from SM desk
  • Page dressing rooms and order evacuation
  • Wait for House Manager to determine location of fire and confirm that evacuation is proceeding
  • Go to stage (if possible) and check that the backstage and dressing rooms are evacuated
  • Leave the building, and close all the doors behind you. Go to the nearest designated fire assembly area (front or side car park)
  • Account for the cast and crew outside the building

Backstage Technicians

  • If fire is backstage or onstage, attempt to control safely if possible
  • If in doubt, proceed with Stage Manager evacuation
  • Remain backstage as long as is safely possible to ensure that NO ONE attempts to exit through the backstage area
  • Once patrons have cleared the house, assist the Stage Manager in the checking the backstage and dressing rooms areas
  • Once all areas are clear and front of house staff accounted for, evacuate building to the fire assembly point in the front car park

Front of House Manager

  • Once fire has been identified call fire brigade
  • Ensure all toilets are clear of patrons
  • Ensure bar/café, reception and office areas clear of patrons and theatre staff
  • Once all areas are clear and front of house staff accounted for, evacuate the building to the fire assembly point in the front car park.

Theatre fire announcements

1.(Upon activation of the fire alarm system)

“Ladies and gentlemen, the fire alarm has been activated. We are currently determining the extent and location of the problem. Please remain in your seat while we establish the appropriate action. Further announcements will be made shortly.

Emergency procedures are in effect and you are in no immediate danger.

Thank you for your co-operation”

2.(Evacuation Speech)

“Ladies and gentlemen, the fire alarm has been activated. Please remain calm and carefully exit through the door, indicated by our ushers, to the left of the stage.

Emergency procedures are in effect, and you are in no immediate danger.

Thank you”

3.In case of fire on stage

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing technical difficulties.

We are determining the extent and location of the problem. Please remain in your seats while we establish the appropriate action. Further announcements will be made shortly.

Emergency procedures are in effect, and you are in immediate danger.

Please remain calm and carefully exit through the door, indicated by our ushers.

Thank you for your co-operation.”
