3rd Marking Period Science Standards Third Grade

1. Develop abilities in science.

A. Higher thinking (analyze, evaluate, classify, predict, decide, estimate, generalize, solve, compare, simplify).

B. Communications (present, persuade, collaborate, explain, recommend).

C. Goal setting/attainment (brainstorm, envision, research, plan, organize, persist).

D. The quality process (plan, draft, analyze, revise) when producing products.

2. Be able to apply science knowledge and skills to a variety of purposes.

A. Be able to solve problems using the scientific method (research, hypothesis, experimentation, findings, conclusion). [SC-P-MF-S-8, SC-P-EU-S-7, SC-P-UD-S-7, SC-P-ET-S-2, SC-P-I-S-5]

B. Be able to conduct research (field research, library research, experimentation).

SC-P-STM-S-6, SC-P-MF-S-4, SC-P-MF-S-7]

C. Be able to use scientific equipment appropriately (safely, effectively, efficiently, accurately). [SC-P-MF-S-4]

8. Be able to identify the basic types of force (magnetism, gravity, electrical) and energy (electrical, solar, wind, motion, light, heat). [SC-P-ET-S-1]

A. Know that magnets have poles (north & south) and these attract and repel each other.

[SC-P-MF-S-6]

B. Know and make inference to interaction of magnets with other magnets and with other matter (e.g. magnets have a force that can make some things move without touching them: larger size of a magnet does not have to mean it has a greater force). (SC-EP-1.2.1 DOK 3) [SC-P-MF-S-6]

C. Describe the change in position over time (motion) of an object. (SC-EP-1.2.2 DOK 2).

[SC-P-MF-S-1, SC-P-MF-S-2]

D. Describe the position and motion of objects and predict changes in position and motion as related to the strength of pushes and pulls. (SC-EP- 1.2.3. DOK 2) [SC-P-MF-S-3]

E. Explain how forces (pushes or pulls) can cause objects to start moving, go faster, slow down, or change the direction they are going. (SC-EP-1.2.3 DOK 2) [SC-P-MF-S-3]

F. Understand that the position of an object can be described by locating it relative to another object or the background. (SC-EP-1.2.4) [SC-P-MF-S-1]

G. Understand that sound is a result of vibration, a type of motion. (SC-EP-1.2.5 DOK 2)

[SC-P-MF-S-5]

H.  Know that the pitch of the sound can be varied by changing the rate of vibration.

(SC-EP-1.2.5 DOK 2) [SC-P-MF-S-5]

I. Explain how electricity can only flow when it has a closed path (circuit) to follow.

(SC-EP-4.6.3 DOK 2) [SC-P-ET-S-5, SC-P-ET-S-7]]

J. Describe how closed electric circuits can produce light and sound. (SC-EP-4.6.3 DOK 2)

[SC-P-ET-S-5]

K.  Describe light as traveling in a straight line until it strikes an object. (SC-EP-4.6.4 DOK 2)

[SC-P-ET-S-6]

L.  Classify materials according to their properties of interaction with light (reflection, refraction,

absorption). (SC-EP-4.6.4 DOK 2) [SC-P-ET-S-6]
