Target Skill: Cause and Effect

An effect is something that happens as a result of something else. A cause is the reason why something happens. The traffic light turned red, so the cars stopped. Effect-The cars stopped. Cause-The light turned red.

Vocabulary:

2. blurry – unclear or smeared

3. vacant – empty

4. jerky – moving in sudden, uneven, or awkward ways

5. applause – clapping meant to show appreciation

6. blasted – made a sudden, loud sound

1. A habitat is a place where an animal lives.

2. Living things get everything they need such as food, water, air, and shelter from their habitat.

3. A habitat includes both living and nonliving things.

4. Desert habitats are dry and hot.

5. The earth’s largest ecosystem is oceans.

6. Habitats with many trees are forest habitats.

7. Animals such as rabbits and deer can be found in forest ecosystems.

8. Sharks, sea turtles, and crabs are animals that can be found in the ocean ecosystem .

Social Studies:

1. The Sons of Liberty is a group of people who worked to protect the rights of the colonists.

2. Members of the Sons of Liberty protested the new tax.

3. Members of the Sons of Liberty met under a tree that became known as the Liberty Tree.

4. South Carolina formed a Provincial Congress in 1775. This replaced the royal government.

5. Colonists held a meeting known as the Second Continental Congress in May 1775.

6. The members of the Continental Congress wrote the Declaration of Independence stating that the colonies wanted their independence, or freedom, from Great Britain. They wanted to form a new nation, called the United States of America.

7. Thomas Jefferson led the Continental Congress that wrote the Declaration of Independence.

8. The Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

9. Sergeant William Jasper raised the South Carolina state flag during the battle on Sullivan's Island.

10. William Moultrie led the American troops in 1776 when British troops attacked Fort Sullivan.

13. A militia is a group of citizens who have little or no military training and fight on their own.

14. A partisan fighter was Francis Marion. He was known as the Swamp Fox and led a surprise attack on the British in the swamps of the Lowcountry.

15. Andrew Pickens was a farmer who joined the militia when the British burned his farm. Native Americans named him the Wizard Owl.

16. In the Battle of Kings Mountain, in 1780, war changed for the American colonists. It is known as the turning point in the South.

17. In January 1781, General Daniel Morgan and his troops defeated the British at the Battle of Cowpens.

18. The Battle of Eutaw Springs occured outside Charles Town in September 1781.
