Thinking Before We React
“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:19-20).
As we do everything in this life to live as a Christian should, it does not erase situations that will come into our life. The question that we need to ask ourselves is how do we handle those situations? In the book of James we are told to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath. I want us to look at the third area today “slow to wrath,” because of what is said in verse 20 “the wrath of man does not produce righteousness of God.”
Notice the definition of wrath- “the sudden outburst of passionate anger.” (ZPEB) “The blaze of temper which flares into violent words and deeds and just as quickly dies” Barclay.
How do we handle our situations that arrive in this life do we take a deep breath and remain calm or do we just say forget it and have the sudden outburst of wrath? Now some may say I thought it was okay to get angry and let off steam. The Bible tells us that God and Jesus both got angry from time to time, so it must not be that bad. What we need to always remember is that though the "wrath of God" may on occasions accomplish the "righteousness of God, it is clearly stated that the "wrath of man" does not. “For the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. (James 1:20)
Following the example of Christ, there may be a place for anger, but if so, only in things pertaining to the honor and will of God! In all other things, we would do well to remember another scripture. “And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will” (2 Timothy 2:24-26).
