ALGEBRA II CP

Mr. Steele2013-2014

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. My name is Mr. Steele and I will be teaching Algebra II CP. The following is an explanation of guidelines and expectations for the students in this class. I am looking forward to this year of teaching and I hope it is a productive one for all.

RULES AND CONSEQUENCES

-There will be three rules to be followed in the classroom.

-TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT

-BE ON TIME

-BE PREPARED

-IF ANY OF THESE RULES ARE BROKEN, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WILL BE FOLLOWED.

-VERBAL WARNING

-DETENTION WITH ME AFTER SCHOOL

-DETENTION WITH ME AFTER SCHOOL AND A WRITTEN REFERRAL

-WRITTEN REFERRAL AND PHONE CALL HOME

-REMOVAL FROM CLASS AND A PHONE CALL HOME

** CUTTING A DETENTION WITH ME WILL ALSO RESULT IN A WRITTEN REFERRAL.

MATERIALS NEEDED

-Covered Textbook

-3 ring binder with loose leaf paper and/or at least a 3-subject notebook

-Folder for handouts, tests, and quizzes

-Loose leaf paper or extra paper for homework

-Pens and Pencils

-NOTE: We will be using a TI-83 or TI-83+ Graphing Calculator throughout the year. Each student is requested to purchase their own calculator. If this is not possible, I will assign one of these calculators for the student to use for the entire year. The SAME calculator that is issued at the beginning of the year must be turned in at the end of the year. If not, the student will be fined for the entire cost of the calculator. Also, it is the student’s responsibility to replace the batteries in the calculator as needed. Having dead batteries does not excuse a student from assignments, tests, and/or quizzes.

HOMEWORK

-Homework will be assigned on a daily basis and checked at the beginning of the following class. Homework will be graded on a four point scale with four being the highest grade. The specific outlines for each grade, 1-4, will be explained on the first day of class. In order to receive a high grade on homework, I expect it to be neat, on time, and that every assigned problem was attempted with an honest effort. I will then help any student with any question or problem he or she may have. All homework assignments for a given chapter will be distributed to each student on the day that the chapter begins. These assignment sheets will also be posted on the following website: Please note that there will be no late homework. If you forget to do a homework assignment, you receive no credit for it. Also, if a student is legally absent from class, he or she has one day to complete the assignment with no penalty.

TESTS AND QUIZZES

-At the end of each chapter, there will be a chapter test. Each test will be announced ahead of time and a review class will be conducted in class the day before the test or more days in class if needed. For TESTS ONLY, students may earn back half of the points originally deducted by correcting each incorrect problem and explaining in words what mistake was made. I will provide a sheet for making these corrections.

-Quizzes will be given periodically (about every 3 or 4 sections) throughout each chapter and like the tests, will be announced. The quiz questions will be similar to the test questions and will serve as good study guides for the tests.

MAKEUP TESTS AND QUIZZES

-If a student is absent from a test or quiz, it is his or her responsibility to arrange a time with me when the test or quiz can be made up within 5 school days of the test/quiz date. If a student is absent the day before a test and is in class the day of the test, he or she is still expected to take the test on the given test day.

- CHEATING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! If a student is caught cheating, his or her test will be taken and receive a grade of zero. The school policy on cheating will also be enforced. This policy can be found in the student handbook.

**NOTE- BEING ABSENT FROM SCHOOL DOES NOT EXCUSE A STUDENT FROM COMPLETING HOMEWORK, NOTEBOOK CHECKS, QUIZZES, AND TESTS.

EXTRA HELP

- If a student is having difficulties with a given problem or problems, he or she needs to take advantage of extra help. I will be available after school unless I have a meeting or something else school related. If I am not available, it is the student’s responsibility to seek out another math teacher for assistance. Also, the math resource room is available to students during study halls and lunch periods. A math teacher is in this room as well to provide assistance.

QUARTERLY GRADING SCALE

The students’ quarterly grade will be calculated as follows. There will be a total number of points the students can earn during the marking period. Their grade will be the number of points they earn, divided by the total number of points available. The APPROXIMATE breakdown of the students’ quarterly grade is as follows.

TESTS- 50%

HOMEWORK-30%

QUIZZES- 20%

FINAL GRADING SCALE

1st QUARTER GRADE- 20%

2nd QUARTER GRADE- 20%

3rd QUARTER GRADE- 20%

4th QUARTER GRADE- 20%

FINAL EXAM- 20%

**NOTE The breakdown of numerical averages to letter grades is given in the student handbook.

***NO EXTRA CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN***

*NOTE: The North Hunterdon High School Student Handbook will be subject to any disciplinary problem that is not handled within the classroom.

Again, I am looking forward to this school year and I wish the best of luck to all of my students.
