After the race briefing at 7:30am, transition is closed so please all make your way down the promenade for the start. We will direct you towards the swim start after the race briefing.

If the temperature of the sea is between 14 and 22 degrees wetsuits are optional, but due to it being a sea swim we strongly recommend the use of wetsuits for all athletes, plus it will help you swim quicker! The first swim wave will be at 7:45am, the 2nd wave will start 5-10 mins after so please be ready on the beach.

Take your hat and goggles with you into transition, if you drop them on the beach we cannot guarantee they will be found. For Relay Teams, the swimmer will take off their Velcro chip ankle strap in transition at the bike and pass to their cyclist who must put it around their left ankle.

Under the BTF rules athletes must have helmets on and fastened before taking the bike off the racking. Practice this before race day!

Cycle

If you are wearing a number belt make sure your number is turned to the back.

Bikes must not be mounted before the mount line, which will be taped onto the road. Please take care as you walk/run with your bike out of transition.

There will be marshals all round the bike course at key points such as turns, pedestrian crossing, roundabouts etc, but athletes must take responsibility on the roads and stick to the highway code. Marshals are there to guide you, they cannot stop traffic and tell you when to stop or go at these points. It is always worth trying to cycle or drive the course before the race so you are familiar with the route.

  • From transition you will cycle west on West Parade seafront road (this section of seafront will be closed to traffic until 11am).
  • Take a left onto South Cliff road (open to traffic for rest of bike course).
  • At the bottom of South Cliff (1.21km) you join Cooden Drive, please be careful joining this road and keep left.
  • Stay on this road for 3.8km all the way round to Little Common roundabout (4.1km). Take care at Cooden Beach Hotel as the road does a sharp right hand bend before going under the railway bridge, marshals will be there, do not cut the corner!
  • Approaching Little Common roundabout you cycle through the village high street, be aware of parked cars pulling out.
  • 100m and 30m before the roundabout are two sets of Zebra Crossing Traffic lights. Marshals will be positioned here to assist pedestrians reducing the chance of you getting stopped by the lights, but if the Lights go red YOU MUST STOP (DQ if you cycle through a red light).
  • At Little Common roundabout you will take the first left hand exit.
  • Stay on this road for 8km until you reach a large roundabout for the turnaround point. Be careful when pulling across the road as you approach the roundabout (12.06km).
  • Full circle turn (5th Exit) to return on the same route back to the start/finish. Although early, it is a Sunday morning so please be careful on this roundabout.
  • Cycle all the way back to Little Common roundabout (20.2km) and take the 4th exit keeping to the same route you cycled out on.
  • Stay on this road returning back onto the Cooden Drive.
  • On Cooden Drive you continue past South Cliff and cycle on for another 1.2km until turning right into Brockley Road.
  • Please note Cooden Drive is NOT closed to traffic so take caution turning right into Brockley Road. There will be marshals here but it is the athletes responsibility as to when to cross the road. Brockley Road will be closed to traffic. This will take you back out onto the West Parade promenade to transition.

Transition 2: Cycle to Run

The dismount line will be at the end of Brockley Road, climb off your bike before this line (marshals here) and walk / jog into transition.

Helmets must stay fastened until your bike is racked!

Once you have racked your bike, take off your helmet and put your run shoes on, you head for the west end of transition for the run.

Run – Same as previous course

A straight forward 2 x 2.5 loops on the run.

After exiting transition and going under the Start / Finish Gantry you head West and drop onto the lower promenade for 1.25km. You head back turn just short of the gantry and repeat for a 2nd Lap.
