Our flagship Health Care for the Homeless Program, Tom Waddell Urban Health (TWUHC), is recruiting for one Physician Specialist.

TWUHC serves adults experiencing homelessness, residents of permanent supportive housing, and other highly vulnerable individuals at programs in and around San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. Our patients face challenges from chronic disease, substance use, mental illness, poverty, social isolation, and a history of multiple traumatic life events. Services are aligned with Health Care for the Homeless and Harm Reduction models. Specialty services include comprehensive HIV prevention and care; community-based Hepatitis C treatment;office based opiate treatment; transgender care; integrated behavioral health services; podiatry and dental services.

The Physician Specialist will provide primary care and urgent care services to underserved clients in the Tenderloin, working as part of a multidisciplinary team with social workers, health workers, registered nurses, and case managers. She or he will have privileges at San Francisco General Hospital, including direct relationships with a full range of medical specialists. Additional opportunities may be available for teaching, quality improvement work, or project development.

In addition to the qualifications listed in the general announcement, individuals who possess the following skills/experience are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Desire to work in an ambulatory care setting in an urban, multicultural environment serving low income populations experiencing complex medical and psychosocial challenges;
  • Sensitivity to and experience working with sexual orientation and gender minorities;
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the available community-based medical resources in San Francisco;
  • Experience working in and/or developing multi-disciplinary team-based care and chronic care management models;
  • Experience working in and/or developing a Trauma-Informed Care, Health Care for the Homeless and/or Harm Reduction models;
  • Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) or bicultural;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal communication skills:
  • Demonstrates an openness to receiving feedback and proactively elicits feedback;
  • Builds and maintains genuine and supportive relationships with
    colleagues;
  • Successfully inspires motivation from team members using highly skilled communication and modeling techniques;
  • Communicates with patients, colleagues and others in an empathic manner;
  • Models professional behavior when stressed or angry (avoids gossip, raised voice, criticism, stonewalling or other divisive behaviors).
