Newsletter November 2015

Welcome

Welcome to our new family members, Jacques Gregoryand Hein Pyper and our new country member Peter Hohne.

There are many happy days of socialising and sailing awaiting you at SBYC.

Calendar

The calendar is on the website, for your perusal. The Christmas Carols cruise is on the calendar for the 19 December, as Christmas is on a Friday this year. That is less than a month away, so start getting your lights and decorations ready, to share in this awesome event.

Safety

Please be aware that it is compulsory, by law, for anyone up to the age of 12 to wear lifejackets on the water. This starts on the jetty.

Brian Thornton-yachts under 9m and Mike Rothenberg-yachts over 9m, are available for the compulsory CoF surveys. The full check lists for all categories are on the website. Should you have a valid CoF and it is not recorded, please send a copy to Brian. Make timeous appointments, to ensure that they are able to clear your yacht. The cost of CoF’s for under 9m has been raised to R100.

According to the Safety Officer’s records, the list below is of all yachts that do not have validCoF’s recorded at the Club. However, 2 of the yachts over 9m are “pending”.

Cruising

DangerBay Cruise November 15th

We were informed days before the Saturday scheduled cruise that the crayfish season opened on Sunday 15th. The DangerBay cruise was postponed to the Sunday as our prime purpose was to include crayfishing in the event. The weather forecast was not favourable and some departed but returned. It turned out to be a mild day but the crayfish were oh so evasive. Aventura reported nil caught. Rigel netted two of size … others were crabs and eels. Jean-Louis confessed his bait might not have been ‘mature’ or correct for the bay – also nil caught. One hears reports that the crayfish are just not as plentiful as in the past.

General

After discussion the committee decided to make the new area a “smoking permitted area”. The correct signage must be displayed including a sign that states that consideration to non-smokers must be applied. The wording of the signs will still be finalised.

News

The storeroom at the bar is now complete and is much more user-friendly for our bar person, Dawn. Have a look when next you come to the Club.

Unfortunately, complaints have been received regarding the behaviour of some members at the Club. Let’s keep this a happy, sailing club.

A word or two from the Commodore:
