Therapeutic Doll Making: Connections to the Self

This experiential workshop is designed to provide practitioners with knowledge and experience of the therapeutic benefits of doll making. Practitioners will also make their own therapeutic doll to take with them at the end of the day.

Central Coast NSW ~ Friday 03 January 2014

Sydney NSW ~ Thursday 20 February 2014

Blue Mountains NSW ~ Monday 14 April 2014

Canberra ACT ~ Monday 30 June 2014

Workshop Description ~ Although doll making can be of significant therapeutic value it seldom appears in academic literature or course material. This experiential workshop will provide a rare professional development opportunity for practitioners. The workshop begins with a presentation including theory, applications, and techniques, before practitioners engage with doll making themselves.

Even though clients generally complete their therapeutic doll over several sessions, it is envisaged that practitioners will complete their doll during the workshop. It is hoped that this experience of making and developing meaning will provide a tangible reminder of the therapeutic benefits of doll making, just as it does for clients who engage with the process themselves.

Learning Objectives ~ At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

·  Explain the benefits of doll making as a therapeutic technique

·  Outline the key components of therapeutic doll making

·  Identify which clients would benefit from therapeutic doll making

·  Reflect on the experiential process of making their own doll in a professional workshop setting

Presenter ~ Sonia Stace is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, a Registered Art Psychotherapist, and an Approved Counsellor for Victims of Crime and Injured Workers. Along with her Bachelor of Social Work (Honors 1st Class), Sonia also holds a Master of Art Therapy and a Diploma of Statutory Child Protection.

Sonia is experienced in the use of therapeutic doll making with a diverse range of clients, and has authored an article titled “Therapeutic doll making in art psychotherapy for complex trauma”, which will be published in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association (Volume 31, Issue 1). In her private practice Sonia works with people who have experienced traumas such as child sexual abuse, childhood neglect, adult sexual assault, physical assault, domestic / family violence, home invasion, and pregnancy resulting from sexual assault. Doll making is a sensorimotor therapeutic approach that Sonia often utilises with these clients as it is of significant therapeutic value and enables treatment outcomes to be realised.
