Español I (Dr. Gallardo): Midterm Study Guide

Your midterm exam will consist of 3 parts:

  1. Reading & listening (multiple choice, on a laptop), 50%
  2. CPA, oral: 25%
  3. CPA, written: 25%

TIPS FOR LISTENING/READING SECTION

  • Read the instructions. Read the instructions. Read the instructions.
  • Focus on the words that are familiar to you(you don’t need to understand every word you read/hear to answer the questions!)
  • Look at the picture or graph, if there is one

TIPS FOR THE WRITTEN CPA

  • You will receive a set of instructions to guide you
  • Read the instructions. Read the instructions. Read the instructions.
  • Write only in Spanish. If you can’t write an idea in Spanish using the vocabulary we studied, write a different idea!
  • Proofread your composition (careful with spellings and adjectives)

TIPS FOR ORAL CPA

  • You will have a moment to prepare, and then have a short conversation in Spanish with Dr. Gallardo
  • Speak only in Spanish, and listen to what the other person says!

 PRACTICE YOUR WRITING BY WRITING: Come up with short sentences off the top of your head and write them on a blank sheet of paper. Check that you spelled everything correctly. The more you do this, the better.

PRACTICE YOUR SPEAKING BY SPEAKING: Come up with short sentences and actually say themout loud. Even if you know everything “in your head,” say it out loud when you study.

For the midterm you will use the material we practiced in class (in the games and activities): Have fun with it! 

STUDY PREPARATION

Review the following to prepare for the midterm:

  • Greetings (me llamo, hola, adiós, etc)
  • Telling time (e.g. son las diez y cuarto de la mañana)
  • The calendar (days, months)
  • Body parts
  • Numbers 1-100
  • The weather and seasons
  • Gustar (me gusta/ le gusta + infinitive)
  • Verbo ser (soy, eres, etc)
  • Describe yourself (e.g. soy carismático, no soy antipático)
  • Describe your schedule (yourblocks, teachers, classroom)
  • Adjetivos (e.g. chico simpático, chica simpática)
  • Pronombres (yo, tú, él, etc)
  • -AR conjugation (yo camino, tú caminas, etc)
  • Artículos definidos & indefinidos (el/la/una/una/etc)
  • Verbo estar (estoy, estás, está, etc).

VOCABULARIO: 1A (activities you like/dislike); 1B (using adjetivos to describe people); 2A (classes & school); 2B (classroom objects, placement of things; Powerpack video.

USE THE VOCABULARY TO COME UP WITH SHORT SENTENCES ABOUT YOURSELF AND/OR YOUR FRIENDS!

ExampleMe llamo Juan, tengo 14 años. Mi cumpleaños (birthday) es el 12 de febrero. Me gusta leer, no me gusta la guitarra. Hoy hace frío. Soy paciente, no soy perezoso. Mi amiga se llama Maria (ella es simpática y carismática). En mi clase de inglés hay veinte pupitres, dos banderas, etc.

Make sure to re-watch the videos, and to review the previous vocabulary. The more you practice, the more confident you will be on the exam!
