low-income residents of Carroll County, MD. Caring Carroll

Caring Carroll recruits, trains, and supports a network of volunteers who help meet the non-medical needs of chronically ill, disabled, isolated, or elderly adult residents who are striving to remain independent in their homes. We are part of the Partnership for a HealthierCarrollCounty. The position will be located at the Carroll County Health Department on Center Street, or at the Non-Profit Center on Clifton Blvd. (pending).

CarrollCounty Bureau of Aging

The Bureau of Aging is responsible for a wide range of programs and services primarily for adults age 60 and over. Combined federal, state, and county funding support essential services for Carroll County's older citizens: senior information and assistance, senior and community centers, elder abuse prevention and awareness, guardianship, transportation, pharmacy assistance program, curbing Medicare and Medicaid abuse, income tax assistance, insurance counseling and advocacy, meals, tax abatement programs, long term care ombudsman, legal assistance, Medicaid Waiver for Older Adults Program - case management and provider billing, health screenings, senior care program and services, family caregiver programs, employment, nutrition education and counseling, housing counseling and education, medical assistance programs, energy assistance, caregiver counseling, support groups and web-site information for older adults. The Bureau of Aging operates five Senior and Community Centers in CarrollCounty. Each center is a community focal point where older adults can receive services and participate in social, recreation, educational, fitness, health, nutritional, and informational activities. The centers also provide information to non-older adult community members. Many outside groups from the community use senior and community centers to hold meetings and activities. The centers are located in Westminster, South Carroll, North Carroll, Taneytown and Mt.Airy.

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce is a business advocacy organization. Our Mission is to provide a sound economic environment in which business can prosper. We have a staff of four that provide services to 500 members, with the majority being ten employees or less and the largest CC Govt. & CCPS. Members businesses are located in CarrollCounty, HowardCounty, Frederick County., Baltimore County & City, PA and VA. They belong because they do business in CarrollCounty. We provide education through monthly meetings and special seminars, networking with business professionals,and providing direct marketing to the business community by means of Chamber publications and the web. Members information is available 24/7 on the web, and staff are available during business hours to personally answer inquires from the public. We only refer member businesses to the public seeking services. Carroll County Chamber of Commerce has been serving the business community for 85 years. Members volunteer to serve on committees. During the legislative session our Legislative Committee meets to review up-coming bills and provides our representatives with feedback. We provide scholarships to students seeking business degrees who will be attending McDanielCollege or CarrollCommunity College. We work in partnership with the Carroll County Department of Economic Development and CarrollCommunity College to accomplish our mission. Our Leadership Carroll Program provides leadership training and an in-depth look at CarrollCounty to up-and-coming business leaders. We have 300 graduates and a Leadership Alumni Organization that provides additional leadership training. The Chamber also organizes special events such as the Annual Gala Dinner Dance (a fundraiser for the Charles D. Schaffer Scholarship), Business Conference & Expo, Outstanding Teachers Awards, Job Shadow Day, Corporate Challenge,and Business Awards Dinner. Special meetings include - State of the County with the Commissioners, CountyBudget, Legislative Breakfastand then a Wrap-up.

Carroll County Food Sunday is a non-profit organization of volunteers and members of the community coming together to support CarrollCounty residents in meeting their emergency and supplemental food needs. Our program aims to sustain health, good nutrition and energy, raise human potential and do so in a manner that enhances human dignity. Over 400 families are served each week at three locations in CarrollCounty with food packages predicated by family size by 100 volunteers.

All other activities are done on a volunteer basis -- serving on the Board, fund-raising, computer design and enhancement, working at the Food Bank, collecting food, and sorting and distributing food.At this time we are looking for help in the Marketing and Computer areas. We are looking for help to enhance our display materials for presentations to groups. Food Sunday is also looking for help in upgrading our client data base to take advantage of hardware and software upgrades. A requirement analysis has been done and we are looking for software to be written.

Founded in 2004, the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation is comprised of a very engaged Board of Directors and dedicated volunteers. Our mission is to be the voice for melanoma prevention, detection care and cure. We support local and regional health departments, hospitals and schools with educational materials and sunscreen samples that we provide for free for health fairs or other community-based awareness programs. We are currently working with CarrollCounty schools developing a teen awareness program and will soon be including surrounding counties in that effort. We have an outreach program still in early development, and a research scholar award that has gone national in its search for new research projects. Our goal is to continually increase our efforts to get the word out about this deadly disease until there is a cure.
