Background Information

The family of W. S. (Sherman) and Wanda Alge established this scholarship in appreciation of the values and memories from the village, Arlington High School, and as citizens of Arlington, Ohio. The close-knit support of the community and guidance provided by teachers at the school helped provide the foundation for many students to pursue a successful future as citizens and parents. Sherm and Wanda grew up in Arlington and each served their community. Sherm worked for over 53 years at the Farmers and Merchant Bank Company helping many area residents with family and business financial decisions. Wanda worked many years in local businesses, as well as providing services to the Arlington Methodist Church, the school and the community.

Standards for Determining Eligibility

  • The applicant must demonstrate hard work, good citizenship, dependability, and good character.
  • The applicant must be a full-time student enrolled in, or accepted for admission in, the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law.
  • The applicant must have maintained a GPA of 2.5 or better.
  • The applicant must be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • Financial need is a primary consideration.
  • Applicants receiving full scholarship support from other organizations or institutions will not be considered for this scholarship.
  • Preference will be given to an applicant who graduated from Arlington High School.

Application Instructions

Submit all of the items. Please label your items A, B, C, etc. and arrange them in the following order:

Complete the application form by hand or download a fillable copy from Click on the ‘Scholarships’ section and complete the application using Microsoft Word. Please feel free to attach extra sheets if necessary and be sure to sign your application.

  1. Signed and Dated Personal Statement

Submit a personal statement, no more than two pages in length, which addresses the following questions:

  1. Why did you choose to pursue a law degree?
  2. What are your short and long term career goals?
  3. Please briefly describe your leadership experience.
  4. What else would you like committee members to know as they consider your application?
  1. Reference Letters

Please attach two letters of reference in sealed envelopes to your application form (or have the letter mailed directly to the Community Foundation).

  • One reference from an education professional
  • One reference from a personal acquaintance who can testify to your character, integrity and level of determination to succeed (such as long-time friend, mentor, supervisor, but not a family member)

Reference letters should include the person’s title and how long they have known and/or worked with you. Please ask references to comment on hard work, good citizenship, dependability, and character. Reference letters must be signed and dated within nine months of the application deadline.

  1. Deadline & Applying Instructions

Mail or deliver all of the above to The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, c/o, The 101 W. Sandusky St, Suite 207, Findlay, OH 45840. Applications must be postmarked on or before June30th. Please be sure all pages are printed on one side only. Do not use staples or binders other than paper clips. Applications that are late or missing any of the items listed above will not be considered. Applications may also be emailed to , but must be received by 3pm on June 30th.
