GOVT LEANS ON MEHINA TO FESS UP

FEDS SAY FAULTY WHEEL CAUSED ACCIDENT, THINK MEHINA KNOWS MORE

Trainworld City, Story by Dustin Ink: Investigators with the Trainworld Oracle of Transportation have concluded that the accident involving a chemical spill released by a tanker train operated by the Mehina Coal and Chemical Company on May 24th of last year was caused by a worn wheel and truck system on one of the tanker train cars. “There has been no evidence of malice, or foul intent. This appears to simply be an accident,” said Jonathon Trondour of the Oracle of Transportation. “However, what was found inside the tankers is still a bit of a mystery.”

The Oracle of Transportation concluded that a faulty wheel on one of the tank cars owned by the Mehina Coal and Chemical Company caused the accident that released a torrent of unknown chemical into Railton Yard. While the OoT has determined this to be an accident, Transportation officials are still hounding Mehina Chemical as to what the substance was inside the tanker cars. The manifest simply listed the compound as “lubricant, general” but the contents that spilled out didn’t appear to be any lubricant but rather a foam that smelled like creosote. Investigators have been pressing Mehina to release the true contents of the spilled tankers, but so far Mehina officials have been tight lipped saying that “the contents are not toxic, nor are they harmful to the environment and that they are a trade secret.”

The Oracle of Transportation hasn’t said what it plans to do yet in regards to it’s investigation and Mehina Coal and Chemical has cooperated thus far with the clean up and fines. “MCC has been cooperating with our first phase of this investigation and we applaud them for their efforts,” said Trondour. “ We haven’t decided what further action, if any we intend to take in this matter.” Officials at the Mehina Coal and Chemical Company have said that they are hoping to avoid any legal actions on a product which is a “trade secret” in research. The Oracle of Justice hasn’t been notified of any wrong doing at this point.

CALCITE COVE H.S. TO CLOSE

Calcite Cove, Justin Ink: Founded in 1855, Calcite Cove is one of the oldest high schools on the Island. But with declining enrollment, and growing nearby communities, a decision has been made by the Oracle of Education to close the high school at the end of this year and merge it with the surrounding communities. Students will have a choice of attending Walthers, Railton, or Whitefish Valley school districts. Vincent Jon Paul, Principal of Calcite Cove High School says that while the news is saddening, it isn’t shocking. “We’ve been hearing that they were going to close the school for years. The building is original, and other than an auditorium and gym, there hasn’t been any additions or improvements. It’s just falling apart, and then there’s the declining enrollment,” he said. “Several of the quarries over the years have shut down and as those jobs left, so did the kids. We’re now at a point where the community can no longer justify supporting the resources to have a high school at those levels.”

The Calcite Cove Quarrymen rose to power in a flashpoint in 1939 when they won the Island National Tournament in football, their only championship in any sport, defeating Fitzgerald Mariner 14-0. The schools enrollment reached a peak in 1942 at 119 students in grades 10-12 and has steadily declined with the closing of several industries here, with this years enrollment at 89. The Oracle of Education will look for uses for the building once the school is closed.
