ABOUT THE VISBY PROGRAMME SUMMER UNIVERSITY 2006

The VisbyProgrammeSummerUniversity aims to provide a forum for a comprehensive critical discussion of the role the social sciences play in society, and their impact on our lives. The SummerUniversity also offers an excellent opportunity for students and researchers to acquaint themselves with Sweden and its educational system.Individual courses have different profiles (see the specific course descriptions) but all of them consist of lectures, discussion groups and workshops – where students from different disciplines and countries can discuss and debate the topics covered by the lectures.

Admission requirements By this summer, you will need to have completed at least three years of university studies with a major in a social science subject. You also need to possess an excellent command of English. Two of the courses are intended for post-graduate students and young researchers only.

Students from the following countries are eligible: Belarus, Ukraine and the following parts of Russia: the cities of St Petersburg and Moscow and the provinces of Kaliningrad, Pskov, Novgorod, Leningrad, Moscow, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk, the Republics of Karelia and Komi and Nenets autonomous region.

Participants in The Visby Programme Summer University 2005 are not eligible.

HOW TO APPLY:

Application deadline: March 31, 2006

First, decide which course you would prefer to attend. The application form gives you the option to indicate up to two other courses, in addition to your preferred course.

Send your completed application form together with the required enclosures to the Swedish Institute by March 31, 2006. Send your application toSwedish Institute, Skeppsbron 2, Box 7434, SE-103 91 Stockholm, Sweden.Letters of acceptance/rejection will be mailed to you by e-mail, before May 15, 2006.

Applicants to the International Graduate Summer School and Seminar at LundUniversity should also apply directly on the course website: criteria for the VisbyProgrammeSummerUniversity
We will make a selection of candidates based on the following criteria:

•An evaluation of your personal letter of motivation
•Your suitability for the selected course
•Your academic qualifications including the English language

If you are accepted:

Fees and Costs
Practically all the costs are covered by the Swedish Institute’s Visby Programme. There are no course fees, and board and lodging are free and pre-arranged. You will need to make your own travel arrangements to and from Sweden, but travel costs will be mitigated with a grant of SEK 3000 (about 400 USD) upon completion of the course. You will also be covered by an insurance against illness and accidents.
Practical information/Housing/Travel
The individual institutions hosting the summer courses will provide you with information specific to your course (see also their course description). They will arrange accommodation and food. They can also help you with information about local travel options. Do not send inquiries about travel arrangements to the Swedish Institute!
