Dr. Daniel Papero, a faculty member at the BowenCenter for the Study of the Family in Washington, D. C. and a well-known speaker in Vermont, will explore the topic of marriage in his fall presentation.
The Bowen theory addresses the problems in a marriage by utilizing family psychotherapy. In this respect it is to some degree different from other approaches to the relief of marital distress. A significant difference lies in the view that the marital pair is a responding part of a larger family system and not an isolated relationship unto itself. Changes in family relationships can lead to an improvement in marital functioning.Central to marriage is the role of emotions. This presentation will discuss emotions--what are they, how they work, why are they useful and not, and how they become problematic in a marital relationship. An emotion is trainable--spouses can become conditioned to have an emotional response to their partners, responding to behaviors they were originally neutral about. It is this process of training of emotion that forms the connection, and later trouble, between people.
OPTIONAL AFTERNOON OPEN FORUM: After lunch, the VCFS will experiment with an open forum with Dr. Papero. Participants who wish to stay for the forum will be welcome to present live issues for discussion. Since the topic of the morning is marriage, people will also have the opportunity to think about relationship systems in their lives and to present scenarios, ask questions or make comments related to that topic. Dr. Papero will respond freely, not as a coach, but from the point of view of how one would think about the issue from a Bowen family systems perspective.
Dr. Papero lectures frequently to groups around the country and has written essays, book chapters, journal articles and the like. He is best known for his book Bowen Family Systems Theory. He is on the editorial board of the journal Family Systems and has been a faculty member at the BowenCenter for over 20 years. He maintains an active private practice and does clinical supervision in the Washington area and across the United States.
