THE VERA SCANTLEBURY BROWN CHILD WELFARE MEMORIAL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP

ADVICE TO APPLICANTS

This scholarship was created to commemorate and continue the work of the late Vera Scantlebury Brown OBE, who was the first Director of Maternal, Infant and Pre-School Welfare in Victoria from 1926 until her death on 14 July 1946.

Applications for this Scholarship must be made on the approved Application Form and reach the Co-ordinator of the Trust on or before Friday 29 September 2017

THE VALUE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP THIS YEAR IS $6,000 AND UNDER THE TERMS OF THE TRUST DEED IS AVAILABLE TO WOMEN ONLY

The Scholarship is open to the following:

· Maternal and Child Health Nurses with midwifery and infant welfare qualifications registered with the Victorian Nurses Board

· Pre-School Teachers with a university level Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) or equivalent three year degree in early childhood studies and an approved fourth year of study recognised by the Australian Early Childhood Association Qualification Approvals Committee

· Legally qualified Medical Practitioners registered in Victoria

· Women with suitable qualifications in the fields of Public Health, Social Welfare and Education

Benefits and Conditions

· The Vera Scantlebury Brown Scholar will receive up to $ 6,000 in 2017

· At the time of her selection, the Scholar will be required to agree that:

· within a period of no more than 12 months from the date of her completion of her proposal, she shall return to Victoria and work for at least 12 months in the area relating to her Scholarship

· within three months of the completion of her Scholarship, she will submit a report to the Scholarship's Trustees

· any program of study must be approved by the Trustees.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED that failure to comply with the conditions of the Scholarship will render the person liable to repay the Trustees all emoluments received from the Memorial Trust unless failure arises from personal illness, personal accident or other causes as may be deemed reasonable by the Trustees.

Selection criteria

Selection of the Vera Scantlebury Brown Scholar is based on three main criteria:

· the extent to which the applicant's proposal contributes to the health and development of Victorian families

· the professional and/or academic merit of the applicant and supporting documents

· the personal circumstances of the applicant.
