The University of Washington (UW), College of Forest Resources (CFR), invites applications and nominations for the position of Professor and Director of the University of Washington Botanic Gardens (UWBG). Located on the UW Seattle’s East Campus, UWBG consists of several units which include the Center for Urban Horticulture established in 1980 with the goal of developing and applying current knowledge about plants and plant populations to the solution of problems that are generated in urban environments, the Washington Park Arboretum (WPA) a 250-acre site with over 4,000 species of woody plants and cultivars, the Union Bay Natural Area and Union Bay Gardens, the Miller Horticultural Library, the Hyde Herbarium, and the Rare Plant Care and Conservation program. Fourteen UW faculty with research and teaching programs are associated with UWBG. In addition, a permanent staff of 22 and a strong volunteer program help manage the Union Bay and WPA sites, the latter in cooperation with the City of Seattle.
The holder of this tenured full professor faculty position will provide administrative and academic leadership to build UWBG into a world-class research and outreach interdisciplinary unit devoted to urban horticulture, urban forestry, sustainable urban ecosystems, and plant collections. Collaborating with other UW programs, academic institutions regionally, nationally and internationally and public and private agencies and organizations, the Director will build on the solid horticultural, conservation, and restoration reputation of the UWBG. The Director must have superb executive skills, including strong organizational, people, fiscal, and planning skills and demonstrated ability in facility management, budget planning and fund acquisition through grants and private gifts. The Director will have a leadership role in implementation of programmatic initiatives and fundraising for UWBG. The Director is expected to teach specialized seminars, distance-learning courses and a graduate course(s), supervise graduate and undergraduate research, chair graduate student committees, and is expected to develop a research program of relevance to the UWBG mission.
Appointment is at the rank of full professor and salary and benefits are competitive. This is a tenured, 9-month, state funded faculty position with two additional summer months of salary and 11 months of administrative supplement while serving as Director.
The disciplinary focus is open, but applicants in horticulture, arboriculture, urban forestry, ecology, botany, or related fields are encouraged. The applicant is expected to have attained the highest academic rank in his or her field.
