This chart is designed to illustrate permissible and non-permissible activities for athletics staff members who are not designated as coaches (e.g., Director of Operations, Administrative Assistants, Interns, Non-Student Managers and Other Non-Coaching Staff Members with Sport Specific Responsibilities).
PERMISSIBLE / NON-PERMISSIBLE
Sit on bench/sideline during a contest / Provide coaching instruction at any time (i.e. practice or competition)
Be in game huddle (provided no coaching occurs) / Set up offenses, defenses or strategy
Attend and participate in meetings involving coaching activities / In-person scouting of opponents
Analyze video of the institution’s or an opponent’s team / Provide instruction with student-athletes based on analysis of video
Observe practice provided no instruction is given to student-athletes and observation is not for evaluation / Analyze/evaluate videotapes of prospects
Run practice clock / Provide analysis of a practice session
Keep play chart and chart statistics / Observe practice for evaluation
Act as a referee for scrimmage during practice / Participate in practice drills (e.g., ball shagging, rebounding, drills, participate in scrimmages during practice)
Edit/splice game film, coordinate filming and film exchange / Pitch batting practice (baseball and softball)
Handle equipment (e.g., assign equipment) / Conduct workout activities (even if at the request of a student-athlete and/or at an off-campus location)
Track academics / Participate with or observe voluntary activities of student-athletes (e.g., pick-up games, captain’s practices)
Track compliance information / Make or receive calls from prospects (or the prospect’s parents, legal guardians or coaches) that may involve conversations related to the recruitment of the particular prospect prior to the prospect signing an NLI
Review recruiting documentation / Off-campus recruiting (contacts or evaluations)
Be present at on-campus recruiting events (including meals on official visits within 30 miles of campus) / Attend on- or off- campus sporting events in the individual’s sport that involves prospects unless the person is an immediate family member or legal guardian of a participant
Arrange and/or conduct campus tours
Pick up recruits at airport for an official visit
Coordinate pre- or post-game meals
Make telephone calls to or receive telephone calls from prospects provided the prospect has signed a NLI
Coordinate complimentary admissions
Coordinate public service activities
Arrange travel
Prepare and send recruiting materials (e.g. general correspondence, emails)
Work with schedule
Coordinate/manage institution’s camp/clinic
Make and receive telephone calls from a prospect or those accompanying a prospect during an official visit and during official visit transportation
