The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law is in the midst of a sustained period of growth and renewal. In its Strategic plan – Energy.Skills.Excellence. – Calgary Law set itself the dual goalsof enhancing its international eminence in the areas of energy, environmental and natural resources law and continuing its position of national leadership in the area of experiential learning. Since 2011, we have made fifteen new Faculty appointments, and we are looking to make further appointments to begin in 2017 and in years to follow.
The Faculty of Law, University of Calgary, invites applications for up to fourtenure or tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor,Associate Professor or full Professor. Rank will be assessed based on experience and qualifications. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2017, but alternate dates may be considered for exceptional candidates.
Applications are welcome from top candidates at all levels of academic career experience who have and a demonstrated commitment to experiential learning. In particular, we are seeking scholars whose research and teaching background includes:
- energy and/or oil and gas and resources law
- aboriginal law
- business law
- constitutional law
- private law
The successful candidates will be expected to teach in the core JD program and also, if appropriate, to be involved in the graduate programs. They must demonstrate the desire and potential to initiate and produce high-impact research and scholarship. An active research agenda is expected of all member of Faculty, and peer-reviewed external research funding is increasingly valued.
Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must have evidence of:
- the ability to initiate and produce high impact scholarship
- The ability to develop into a strong teacher
Applicants at the Associate Professor level must have evidence of:
- A strong scholarly record
- A successful teaching record
- Established academic engagement in professional and other communities
Applicants at the Professor level must have evidence of:
- Outstanding background in research and publication
- Outstanding teaching and supervision record
- A superior level of academic service and/or leadership
For each of the positions must have a JD/LLB, normally combined with an advanced degree in Law, Business, Economics or other relevantdiscipline at the time of appointment.
Given the premium placed on collegiality at the University of Calgary, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment to constructive participation in the life of the School, the University and the broader professional community.
About the Faculty of Law
Calgary Law offers a JD, as well as a specialized LLM in Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law (NREEL). The school also has a small cohort of doctoral students, and a post-graduate Certificate in the NREEL area. Calgary Law offers a joint JD/MBA program with the Haskayne School of Business, and a joint JD/MPP program with the School of Public Policy. As well, the Faculty has a uniquely-focusedpartnership with the University of Houston Law Center. The ‘International Energy Lawyers Program’ enable students to earn both Canadian and American law degrees in four years and to apply for admission to Bars in the United States and Canada. In 2015, the Faculty introduced the Calgary Curriculum, which placed it at the forefront of innovation in Canadian legal education. The spirit of innovativeness embodied in the Calgary Curriculum has been a core part of the Faculty’s ethos since its founding in 1976.

- Academic and research accomplishments;
- Teaching experience and teaching interests particularly those among the courses in the first year or upper-level required curriculum or those mentioned in the subject areas above;

- A curriculum vitae;
- A statement of research interests;
- Two representative scholarly publications or, where publications are not available, other samples of written work;
- A statement of teaching philosophy;
- Evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as evaluations), or, if no formal teaching experience, then evidence of teaching potential.
