Re: KILLAM TEACHING PRIZES

KILLAM TEACHING PRIZES are awarded to up to six colleagues in the Faculty of Arts. There are no restrictions on rank, the only proviso being that the nominated colleagues should have three or more years of teaching at UBC (including the current academic year). An adjudication committee comprising the previous year’s prize recipients, student representatives, and one or two colleagues appointed by the Associate Dean, will select the prize-winners.

Nominations should be submitted to Heads, Directors and Program Chairs who will submit a dossier to the Dean’s Office. Note that a covering letter from the Head/Director/Chair is NOT required unless there is more than one nominee. If nominated by students, the department must assemble the file.

Deadlines: Nominations to Head, Directors or Program Chairs: 4:00 p.m. January 11th, 2010

Heads submit dossiers to Dean’s Office: 4:00 p.m. February 12th, 2010

RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES

(i)  Heads, Directors and Program Chairs shall strike a committee, including at least one student, to screen and select the candidate(s) for his/her unit.

(ii)  The candidate(s) shall be informed immediately of the nomination, and shall sign a waiver or release of teaching evaluation reports and provide any information relevant to preparing the dossier. In all other matters, candidates should remain at arm’s length from the procedures.

(iii)  The Head, or his/her delegate, should ensure that the dossier meets with the approval of the committee before sending it on to the Dean’s Office. If a unit nominates more than one candidate, they must be ranked.

DOCUMENTATION GUIDELINES

The adjudication committee requests that dossiers be limited to the following items:

(a)  A detailed letter of support from the primary nominator. Where the primary nominator has been delegated, the Head, Director or Program Chair must provide a covering letter endorsing the nomination.

(b)  Teaching Dossier: The candidate should provide a one-page Statement of Teaching Philosophy. The dossier should provide information about courses taught over the last five years only: data on enrolments, teaching load, and grade distributions; data derived from teaching evaluation statistics; three representative sets of teaching evaluation forms; sample course outlines, reading lists, examinations, and any other relevant teaching materials. Information about curriculum development, innovative pedagogy, mentoring or activities outside the classroom should be included in this dossier. Please include computer printouts of student teaching evaluations for all courses taught during the past five years.

(c)  Letters of support: These should be limited to THREE from each of the following categories: (i) undergraduates (ii) graduates and teaching assistants (iii) colleagues (iv) alumni. These can be letters from individuals, or composite letters compiled by the Head or Director’s committee. The committee is obligated to read only the first three letters in each category and thus letters in excess of three will be removed from the file.
