TEXT: Precalculus, Second Edition, by John W. Coburn, published by McGraw Hill.
PREREQUISITES: [3450:145 with a grade of C- or better], or Placement. You are responsible for having the appropriate prerequisite. Not having the right prerequisite may cause the withdrawal of your name from the course without refund.
CALCULATOR: The use of a graphing calculator functionally equivalent to TI83/ TI83+ or TI84/TI84+ is required.


OFFICE HOURS: Mon 2-3, Wed 3-4, Thu 10-11. Also available by appointment.
Tests and Quizzes: There will be three one-hour tests, and a uniform comprehensive final exam. The final exam is Monday, December 7th, 8:00 AM - 9:55 AM. In addition a quiz will be given every Friday that a test is not given..

Homework: Homework will be assigned once a week on the webpage

and will be due on Fridays. Late homework will not be accepted. However, one homework will be dropped.


GRADES: Each of the one-hour tests will be worth 100 points, the final 200 points, the quizzes will be worth a total of 100 points (after rescaling if necessary), and the homework will be worth 100 points (after rescaling if necessary). This gives a total of 700 points for the semester. Quizzes are based on all problems assigned. Homework will be collected, a few problems will be graded, and each collected homework will be worth 10 points. The final scale will be

F<60%≤D...D+<70%≤C-...C+<80%≤B-...B+<90%≤A-<92%≤A


POLICIES: In the case of a missed test, permission prior to missing test is needed for a makeup test. No make up quizzes will be given. No drops after 12-th week (See http://www.uakron.edu/registrar/Fall2009wddates.php for more information on add/drop deadlines). Attendance is required. Three or more unexcused absences may cause the reduction of the course grade by one letter. Leaving the class early, without prior notice, will count as an absence. No activated electronic devices (cell phone, pager, etc) are allowed in the classroom. Plus and minus grading system will be used. Students whose names do not appear on the university's official class list by September 4, 2009 will not be permitted to participate (attend class, take exams, or receive credit).
Submitted homework must show all work. Only writing the answer of each problem is not enough.
