CALL TO ARTISTS

Project:Bike Rack design

Sponsor:The Town of Barnstable

Venue:BismorePark, Ocean Street, Hyannis (HyannisHarbor)

Awards:Two $250.00 cash prizes for each selected designs for the two designated areas or one $500.00 cash prize if designs for both areas are submitted by same artist.

Eligibility: Submissions are open to all visual artists, designers, and engineers 18 years of age or older.Only original work created within the last three years may be submitted.

Artists, designers and engineers are invited to submit creative artistic designs for outdoor bike racks to be used at BismorePark located in the HyArts Cultural District in Hyannis on the HyannisHarbor. BismorePark is artfully distinguished for the 7 colorful artist shanties that are filled with Cape Cod artists and artisans displaying their unique pieces of art beginning each May thru October. Several million residents and visitors pass through the HyannisHarbor each year.

This call to artists offers the opportunity to design a functional, aesthetically intriguing design.

Those submitting proposals should consider the following:

>These bike racks will be fabricated in galvanized steel with colored powder coating or comparable durable components to withstand the elements. The artist is submitting the design only, the town will cover expense to fabricate.

>The rack should accommodate approximately 5 to 10 bicycles.

Measurements of space #1 (VisitorCenter): 8’ X 19’

Measurements of space #2 (Shed): 12’ X 18’

>The base or anchoring points of the rack will be submerged three feet into the ground or properly secured to a concrete pad with tamperproof hardware.

>The rack must be designed to:

  • support an bicycle by its frame in the upright position
  • have two points per bicycle to secure the bike to the rack
  • allow each bicycle to be removed without having to move another bicycle
  • endure repeated user interaction and engagement
  • accommodate a variety of bicycle sizes and shapes.

Submission Process:

All design submissions are due by midnight, Monday, January 14th, 2013. The design submissions should be mailed to: Growth Management Department, c/o Melissa Hersh, Town of Barnstable, 367 Main Street, Hyannis, MA 02601.

All submissions must include:

Cover letter with project name, designer name and contact information; Up to 4 sketches/images of the design submitted on a CD or Thumb drive. Jpegs should be 300 dpi resolution) labeled with your project name and; A typed statement about the design of no more than 500 words.

All submissions will be reviewed by a committee between Tuesday January 15th and Wednesday January 30th, 2013. Applicants will be notified of the selection of design no later than Friday February 1st, 2013. Should a design not be selected, no cash prize will be awarded. The Town reserves the right to extend the call for design submissions.

All submissions become the property of the Town of Barnstable. The Town reserves the right to discuss an alternate design with the selected artist for use with the bike rack or for other design projects within the Town of Barnstable. The Town reserves the right to reject all designs submitted.

The selected artist will receive full credit and promotion for selection of design.
