FeelingsRelay– Lesson PlanFeeling Diagram Page
Class level: Elementary – High school / Lesson Time: 55 minutes
English level: Beginner to Advanced / Expected number of students: 20 - 40
Context: Understanding and recognizing selected Feelings.
Teaching aids: White/chalk board. Feelings diagram page (this can be reused from the past lesson where the feelings diagram page was completed), Feelings flashcards (PPT or printable)- these can download these from my uploaded teaching materials on ESL101.com, the five activity pages that accompany this lesson, and a soft foam ball for playing conversation hot-potato
Learner objectives:
For all students to speak in English using the feelings studied and for advanced students to also use English to describe when the feelings might be felt, and describe in English how a person behaves when they experience the feelings. Students should also have the opportunity to practice correct pronunciation. / Teacher aims:
Involve all students in an engaging lesson. Assess student learning.
Expose students to speaking English in a structured learning environment.
Procedure / Phase / Timing
Before class starts, the teacher will need to write the names of the feelings to be used during the lesson. The teacher should cover the words and reveal them as they are introduced during the lesson.
The teacher begins by asking the students what feelings they can identify in English. Also ask them to describe the feelings.
*Prior to this lesson, the students need to have completed the lesson “Feelings Vocabulary Introductory Lesson,” completing the feelings diagram page (the third page of this file)
Review either the feelings diagram page or the feelings flashcards one feelings at a time with the class to draw upon prior knowledge of feelings for this lesson.
(1) Ask the class to say the feelings displayed.
(2) The teacher models the correct pronunciation by reading the feelings.
(3) The class re-reads the feelings.
(4) The teacher asks the class as a whole or calls one student to demonstrate the feeling. (For students who need a lot of attention from their classmates or adults, this is a great way to have them focused on the lesson, yet at the same time get the individual attention they crave.)
Relay Activity:
(1)Group the students together into two or three groups depending on the size of the class.
(2)Call upon one person to describe one of the feelings from the feeling diagram page (what happens when someone experiences the emotion/feeling, and what circumstances would make a person feel the emotion/feeling.). (For a beginner English level class the describing person can be the teacher. For intermediate and advanced classes the person giving the description can be a student from the class.) A different student will give the description for each round.
(3)When a student from any group thinks he/she knows the feeling being described that student will stand up for the teacher will call upon to answer. One point is earned each time a feelings item is correctly identified.
Closing Activity
  1. The teacher reviews the Feelings studied by displaying a Feeling flashcard and asking the class “How do you feel?”
  2. The teacher, gently toss the foam ball to a student to answer the question.
  3. The student who caught the ball answers by identifying the Feeling flashcard held by the teacher. The student responds “I feel __(Feeling displayed on the flashcard held by the teacher)_.The student is then encouraged to demonstrate the Feeling (for 5 seconds).
  4. After answering, the teacher changes the card. The student tosses the foam ball to another student and the student who previously had answered the question now asks the second student,“How do you feel?”
  5. The student who caught the ball answers by identifying the Feeling flashcard held by the teacher. The student responds “I feel __(Feeling displayed on the flashcard held by the teacher)_.The student is then encouraged to demonstrate the Feeling (for 5 seconds).
  6. The process repeats itself with the responding student taking a turn at asking the question to the next student.
Continue to toss the ball until all students have taken a turn
The point of the activity is to have students attempt speaking in English and become familiar with the Feelings studied. If the students do not respond correctly it is still okay as long as they are gently corrected and the class can hear the correct answer.
+If students decide they want to do a feeling not in the cards (energetic, taciturn, morose, etc.) that is okay also. Just inform the class that there are many feelings that people can have. / Engage
