A History Lesson

In pre-Christian times the lottery technique was employed at the feast of Juno Februaria, February 15. On that day it was thought that the birds chose their mates for the season. By a form of sympathetic magic boys and girls would draw lots for one another…When Christianity took over…the date was shifted to February 14, and the honor given to Valentinus, a priest who was condemned by Emperor Claudius II to be beaten, stoned, and then beheaded. While awaiting execution he is said to have formed a friendship with the blind daughter of his jailor, to whom he wrote a note on the eve of his death, signed, “From your Valentine.” The date was February 14, A.D. 270.

Laughter, the Best Medicine

Having grown up in a small Alabama town, my friend James couldn’t wait to tell us all about life in California, where he was stationed. “The malls are massive, and the restaurants are great,” he said. The he grinned. “I even went to a topless bar.” “Really?” said his mother, surprised. “What do they do if it starts to rain?”

Greetings, GLB members:

….And along with the above sayings by notable men of wisdom I say “thanks” to those of you for taking the “time” to support the GLB events of 2009 including the “Spotlight on Youth” concert on December 27, 2009.

Sincere gratitude to Dorothy Jackson Hayes and her committee members; Gloria Lindsay, Fred Johnson, and Dera Tatum, Henrietta Fortson, Mr. Nathaniel Riddick, Robert Ball, Barbara Cole, John Mayes, Jr., and Harry Berthelot. Special thanks to Dera Tatum for the beautiful program cover and Henrietta Fortson for program printing and finishing. Also, thanks to Lilla Wesley, refreshment chairperson and to our vice president, Sandra Wheeler and Dorothy J. Hayes for their “special” financial donations and, most of all, to the young people who performed. I would be remiss if I did not say thank you to Rev. Dr. Hilly Hicks for continuing to support our efforts and allowing us the use of the church for our meetings and special programs.

Speaking of time! There are six Branch five Branch meetings remaining in this fiscal year and three important events: the up and coming Spiritual concert, Feb. 21; the Scholarship competition, May 8 and the annual fund raiser in July. Members please note: The planning of all events begins with the members of the program committee which in turn presents the plans to the Board members who then bring the recommendations to YOU, the Branch members for YOUR input and approval. It is important, then, that you attend the meetings. Also, the financial secretary and treasurer are there to see that you receive monthly reports of financial transactions and actual copies of bank statements. These are your benefits when you attend the meetings!

May God bless you and please have a very happy New Year.

WE WOULD LIKE YOUR INPUT!

Recent events have lead us to ask the question “How important is the Carillon?” Point in case: there were no attendees at the January, 2010 Board meeting nor the January 10, 2010 Branch meeting. Is this because you did not receive a Carillon and forgot that our monthly Branch meeting is always the second Sunday in each month, unless otherwise stated, or was it that you just had other engagements? If the date and time are not good do you have any suggestions that would be better suited for the majority? We would appreciate your input. Please contact our president, Mamie Henry with your recommendations. She can be reached at (213) 749-5892. Or you can email our corresponding secretary, Patti Anderson at .

Spotlight on Youth Concert

Sunday, December 27, 2009

If you were not in attendance at the Spotlight on Youth program on December 27, you missed a special treat. Our young people were in rare form as they presented their selections. Beginning with Marvin Brown-King, decked out in white tie and tails, we were mesmerized by his Chopin and Bach selections on piano. He was followed by Helia Daigeau, classical tuba player, rendered two selections beautifully, accompanied by her father, Mike Daigeau, on piano. Our little “miss Ella”,

Alexandra Isley, jazz vocalist, did herself proud with “Don’t Go to Strangers” and “How Long Has This Been Going On.” Her scatting just seems to come so naturally. Sarah Johnson, jazz flautist, played unaccompanied, two of her own compositions. Princeton Parker, jazz pianist (the only high school participant) gave his special renditions of “All the Things you Are” by Kern & Hammerstein II and “Moanin” by Bobby Timmons. Next was a mini jam session with Marcus Paul, jazz trumpeter in the spotlight, accompanied by Jonathan Richards on bass and Victor Gould on piano. Then Jonathan Richards played two jazz numbers on his bass, a Kenny Burrell number, accompanied by Victor Gould on piano and “Sunny Side of the Street” unaccompanied. Victor Gould, who flew in especially for this program, treated us to his jazz renditions on piano of “Body & Soul” and “Giant Steps”. We had the pleasure of hearing from Mahesh Balasooriya, a renowned jazz and classical pianist and former GLB scholarship participant. He played “Sweet Georgia Brown”, a favorite of Dorothy Hayes’ and “I Hear a Rhapsody”. The final performance of the evening was special guest artist Ashley Faatoalia, a fantastic tenor and also a former GLB scholarship participant. He was accompanied by Dr. Louise Thomas on piano as he sang “Pourquoi Me Reveiller?” from Werther by Jules Massenet and “Der Muller under Bach” by Franz Schubert. We remember these young people as they were must starting out several years ago and they have grown into fine musicians. We wish them all of the success as they continue their education and musical endeavors.
