The Sunnylea Allergy Committee would like to invite all parents who are interested in raising the level of allergy awareness at Sunnylea to a general meeting after March break. We will also update the "Safe Food List" for the next school year.

Please email May Lam at for more info.

Earth Hour Participation

On Friday March 25th Sunnylea Junior School will show its support for Earth Hour, which officially takes place on Saturday March 26th, between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. At the school, students and staff will try to be as electricity-free as possible throughout the afternoon, but especially for one hour, from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. Let’s be green together.

Vacation Time During the School Year

Occasionally, families find it necessary to take vacation time during the school year. The staff at Sunnylea ask for your support in not asking teachers to provide work packages and/or the re-teaching of lessons your child has missed while on vacation. Teachers will save any worksheets that are handed out during your time away, and students can collect these upon their return. Please enjoy your time away: collect brochures, read together, write a journal, make a scrapbook, discuss geography and local culture and otherwise enjoy all the learning experiences provided by your holiday.

Roman Soldier

This month an actor playing the role of a Roman soldier came to our school to talk about the ancient Romans. He showed us different battle formations, weapons and many Latin words. He told us about his life in Ancient Rome. He let us try out weapons including swords, spears and shields. He even let Petar try on the armour. We really enjoyed Marcus Annaeus Felix’s visit!

Man in Arms

On February 7th, Peter Hurley, the Man in Arms, came to Sunnylea to perform in front of Mrs. Barker’s grade 4 class. He came to tell us all about medieval times. He was funny, and we learned different things. He let us try on the different armour, helmets, and even let us pick up the weapons. He joked that if anyone was bleeding we would have to leave the school, because Ronnie works so hard to keep it clean. Ha ha! We were so lucky that Peter came to teach us about medieval times.

Medieval Times Field Trip

At the Medieval Times dinner and tournament, the knights provided a show that was better than a movie. They clashed with real swords, shields, maces and a battle axe. The food was great and it was like a real medieval banquet. We visited the stables and all of the horses were eating hay while kids were watching from the windows. Some kids got their flags and toys signed by more than one knight. In all, it was a great trip.

The Kahurangi Dance Troupe: School-Wide Presentation

The Kahurangi Dancers were Maori dancers who came from New Zealand. They did a special performance for the students at Sunnylea and showed us what a traditional Maori war dance was like. It was loud and they were making funny faces. The Maori’s made these faces to scare people. Men and women did different dances. The women had white balls on string that they spun around to represent birds. The Kahurangi dancers would have performed for the queen. We learned that the word “kiaora” means hello or thank you in the Maori language. We really enjoyed the dancers. It was a great show!

Parents Share with Grade 5 Class

Sunnylea parents have a wide range of talents, skills and knowledge they can share with our students. If you have a profession, hobby or interest you would like to share with our students, please let your child’s teacher know, and we can take it from there. This month, the grade 5 class has had 3 separate parent visits, as described below:

Guide Dog Presentation

In February, Sandy Turney organized for a woman named Bev to come to our classroom to speak to us about guide dogs. Bev brought inher guide dog, who acts as her eyes. Bev taught us the many jobs different guide dogs have. Sandy also visited with Nero, a puppy she is training to be a guide dog. We learned about the harnesses and jackets guide dogs wear to identify themselves. Guide dogs do important jobs to help people in our community.
