/ ISA – The Lexden Prize
your “most remarkable sixth form student”

The Lexden Prize is named in honour of Lord Lexden, ISA President and President of CIFE (the Council for Independent Education). He is a British historian, author and politician who sits as a Conservative life peer in the House of Lords. Lord Lexden is a former General Secretary of the Independent Schools Council (ISC), a faithful friend to ISA and a champion of independent education in this country.

The prize celebrates the achievement of sixth formers in education at the schools of ISA Members; achievement and education are considered in the broadest sense, definitely not just academic and should certainly include a pupil’s outstanding involvement in, and service to, wider aspects of school and community life, as well as potential for the future.

Nominations

Being nominated by the school is an achievement in itself. The names (only) of all nominated pupils will be entered in the Roll of Honour published on our website and they will receive an ISA presentation certificate. We therefore encourage all ISA Members with a sixth form to submit a nomination. Nominees will usually be in their final year of education, ie Upper Sixth Form, having turned 18 in the current academic year. The nominee can be studying for any curriculum, including A Levels, IB, BTECs, apprenticeship, other academic or vocational qualifications.

Criteria

The criteria for this award is simple and deliberately broad. ISA Members are asked simply to nominate their “most remarkable sixth form student” and the nomination process is in three parts:

The submissions must not mention the name of the school.

a) A short nomination from the ISA Member (300 words max)

b) A short personal statement from the nominee (500 words max)

c) A sample piece of marked/assessed written work

Please note: the application takes place before the external examination results and does not depend on, or indeed include, exam results.

Closing date: 30 June 2018.

ISA’s Education Committee will consider and adjudicate the nominations.

Nominations should be made on the attached form and submitted to ISA by 9AM by30 June 2018. Entries will be considered at the next EdCom meeting with announcement of winners before the end of the autumn term.

The winning pupil is awarded a book token along with a presentation certificate. The school is awarded a large glass plaque for display. Arrangements will be made for a formal presentation of these prizes. The committee may also choose to award certificates to Runners-up and Highly Commended entries.
