Instructions
Recognized student organizations and university programs are eligible to nominate officers, members, organization, and advisor for appropriate awards.
Organization or Program will submit one nomination form (pg 4).
Organizations and Programs may be nominated for every applicable award once. Each nomination will be no longer than one page and must be in outline format
When submitting materials, please follow the format instructions as shown on the following page.
Nomination Format
- Name of award, name of organization/program and nominee in header on the right.
- Optional one paragraph introduction.
- Bullet points explaining how the nominee meets the criteria.
- Entire nomination must be double spaced in 12 point sized font.
- Total nomination must be no more than two pages.
Any questions regarding the nomination application or event may be directed to Sarah Paille-Jansa () or the appropriate Organization Council SGA representative.
Nominations for all awards must be e-mailed to , no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 3rd, 2013.
No extension for nominations will be granted.

DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS OF AWARDS
This award is designed to recognize the hard work and dedication that it takes to establish a new organization. Nomination for this award requires the organization to be recognized by the Elon University Student Life Committee for no more than 2 years, and no less than 6 months. Please limit your nomination to one page.
Consider the following criteria when nominating your organization:
- Why should your organization be chosen as the Outstanding New Organization?
- When was your organization recognized by the Elon University Student Life Committee?
- What experiences have your organization provided to affect students’ lives at Elon University?
- What has your organization done consistently to distinguish itself from other organizations on campus?
- What does your organization consider its most notable contribution since being recognized?
- What opportunities are there for new students to be involved with your organization?
- What impact does this organization have on the Elon Campus?
Reverend Richard McBride CAMPUS/GREATER COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AWARD
(Non-Service Organizations)
The Campus Involvement Award is given to the organization that has contributed the most to the general welfare of the campus and the greater community through service. Their contributions should have affected the students, faculty, and the Elon University community as a whole.
- The organization must have completed volunteer activities in the past year. You must provide verification of these activities through the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement.
- The volunteer activities must be a selfless act for the benefit of the campus, students, faculty, or community with no self-profit or gain.
Please answer the following questions
- Describe your most valuable volunteer activity. Why do you think it was valuable?
- List, starting with your most recent, the volunteer activities that your organization has completed within the last academic year.
- Why do you feel that your organization deserves this award?
- How many service hours has your organization completed from March 2012-January 2013
HIGHEST GPA AWARD
The Student Government Association seeks to recognize those groups who maintain the highest academic standards and performance. This award will be based on the cumulative GPA’s of organization members as provided by the Office of Student Activities. Therefore, student organizations must have current membership rosters on file. University Program rosters must be verified by the reporting dean. Student organizations and University Programs must self-nominate for this award.
STUDENT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR
This award is designed to recognize the organization that has excelled throughout the calendar year. In recognizing the difference in activities between large and small organizations, two Organizations of the Year awards will be given. One award will recognize smaller organizations with 29 members or less. The other award will recognize larger organizations with 30 members or more. The overall GPA of the organization will also be considered for this award. Groups must be in good conduct standing with the Office of Student Activities and the Office of Student Conduct. When nominating your organization please consider the following criteria:
- What is the mission statement/purpose of the organization and how has it been fulfilled during the calendar year?
- How does the organization benefit Elon’s campus?
- What campus events has the organization participated in and/or sponsored, beyond its normal operation?
- How has the organization promoted itself and the name of Elon University in the surrounding community?
- What is the organization’s involvement with other campus organizations?
- How has your organization grown from successes/failures in the past year?
- How has your organization gone beyond its mission/purpose?
- Does this organization affect the lives of persons unaffiliated with Elon, or does the impact of this organization extend to the greater community?
UNIVERSITY PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
(Departmentally funded or managed group)
This award is designed to recognize the University program that has excelled throughout the calendar year. When nominating your university program please consider the following criteria:
- What is the mission statement of the program and how has it been fulfilled during the calendar year?
- What campus events the program participated in and/or sponsored? Is the event outside of the normal realm of this program's purpose?
- How has the program promoted itself and the name of Elon University in the surrounding community?
- What is the program’s involvement with other campus groups?
- Have students managed this program?
- What leadership positions do students hold within the program?
- Are the students in the leadership positions paid? Which positions are paid positions? (Name the paid positions)
- How does the program benefit Elon’s campus?
- Does this program affect the lives of persons unaffiliated with Elon, or does the impact of this program extend to the greater community?
STUDENT ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE OF THE YEAR
SGA wants to recognize committees that have excelled and enhanced their organization. These teams should have set and/or continued a vision for their organization and worked their hardest to reach that vision.
- The team should consist of at least 4 members and no more than 10 members.
- The team should have concentrated on planning and creating a vision for their organization. The nomination for this award should be selected by officers.
- Explain how the committee has gone above and beyond what is expected.
BARBARA H. CARLTON OUTSTANDING ADVISOR OF THE YEAR
The Outstanding Advisor of the Year Award is named for Barbara H. Carlton, former SGA advisor and Director of Student Activities. The award is designed to recognize an advisor’s hard work, time, and effort dedicated to their student organization. Organizations may nominate only one advisor. The nominated advisor should exemplify the following:
- Consistent support to the organization throughout the calendar year;
- Should be a leader on campus;
- Should be a mediator between the faculty/administration and the organization he/she is representing;
- Should have compassion and concern for the organization that he/she is advising;
- Should support the organization and the principles it stands for;
- Should advise the organization on a volunteer basis, not as a paid requirement of the position with the University. Advisors who are employed by Elon to advise the Program or Organization are NOT eligible for this award;
- Should participate actively and advise during non-business hours;
- Should be accessible to the organization if needed.
- Faculty and staff who coach sports clubs are eligible for this award; and
- Give an example of how this person has gone above and beyond the job description of an advisor.
GERALD FRANCIS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING FACULTY MEMBER OF THE YEAR
The SGA Academic Council gives the Gerald Francis Outstanding Faculty Person of the Year award to one faculty member who exemplifies excellence within teaching and mentoring. Recipient must be a teaching faculty member. The recipient is selected from a pool of faculty members nominated by students, voted on by the SGA Academic Council, and conferred by the SGA Senate. The criteria are:
- The faculty person who epitomizes teaching in a way that enhances student’s learning ability (understand information).
- Faculty whose impact on students includes, but also extends, beyond the walls of the classroom.
BRIAN O’SHEAOUTSTANDING SERVICE TO STUDENTS AWARD
Student Government would like to recognize the staff member of the year, who has gone above and beyond their call of duty in their job. This award is named for Brian Charles O’Shea, former staff member who served the student body well beyond the duties listed in his job description. This individual is not a teaching faculty member, but is a University staff member or a staff member that works in the auxiliary services area (ARAMARK, Campus Shop). This award is nominated by Elon students and selected by the committee. Please include their position and responsibilities. The criteria are:
- The staff member demonstrates outstanding service to students beyond the responsibilities of their job description.
- A member of the staff, which goes beyond their job description in order to better service students\ and dedicates time beyond the work day to the students
STUDENT ORGANIZATION
MEMBER OF THE YEAR/ (NON-OFFICER)
Organizations are vital to student involvement on college campuses. However, these organizations would not be possible without the hard work and determination of the students who go the extra mile. The SGA will recognize an outstanding individual who gives their time and energy for their organization in a role not defined by their leadership position. The following is a list of qualities to help your organization choose a nominee for outstanding member. Each organization may nominate only one member.
- The member should be a recognized member of the organization.
- The member should have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (no rounding) and currently enrolled in no less that 12 semester hours, unless a graduating senior.
- The member should have attended at least 80% of the meetings or should exceed the organization’s attendance policy by two meetings.
- If there are outside events that are sponsored by the organization, the member should have participated in at least 75% of the events.
- The member should not only be determined and willing to work for the organization, but he/she should have a positive attitude toward his/her duties and toward other members.
- Give an example of how the member helped out in a difficult situation.
- How has the member gone the extra mile?
- How has the member encouraged active involvement in the organization?
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONOFFICER OF THE YEAR
SGA recognizes that an organization could not grow and move forward without officers to lead the organization through its failure and success. The SGA seeks to recognize an outstanding individual who gives his/her time and energy for the organization, and who leads with commitment, character, and integrity. The following is lists of qualities, which will help your organization, nominate an outstanding officer. Each organization may nominate only one officer.
All of the criteria established for the Member of the Year Award should be considered, in addition to the following criteria:
- The nominated officer is expected to have gone beyond the call of duty.
- The nomination for outstanding officer award should be chosen by the membership of the organization, not by the officers. Nominators may want to consider input from the advisor of the organization.
- Give an example of how the officer has helped out in a difficult situation or exceeded expectations of an officer.
- How has the officer gone the extra mile?
- How has the officer encouraged active involvement in the organization?
- How has the officer demonstrated integrity in leadership?
STUDENT ORGANIZATION
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
This award is designed to recognize new student leaders involved in organizations. SGA seeks to recognize outstanding individuals who give their time and energy to organizations and show potential for positive impact. Each organization may nominate only one member.
- The member should be a recognized member of the organization and listed on the organization roster.
- The member should have at least a 2.5 GPA in their first semester and currently enrolled in no less than 12 semester hours.
- The member should have attended at least 80% of the meetings or should exceed the organization’s attendance policy by two meetings.
- If there are outside events that are sponsored by the organization, the member should have participated in at least 75% of the events.
- The member should not only be determined and willing to work for the organization, but he/she should have a positive attitude toward his/her duties and towards other members.
- Give an example of how the member helped out in a difficult situation-
- How has the member gone the extra mile?
DR. J. EARL DANIELEY LEADERSHIP AWARD
This award is named after one of our campus’ greatest leaders and is designed to recognize exemplary student leaders on campus. These leaders aren’t necessarily officers or presidents but those students who have made a commitment to their organization. These student leaders dedicate time and have helped the organization grow and develop.
Organizations may nominate two students (one male and one female) for this award.
Nominees should:
- Be nominated by their advisor or organization officers.
- Be a recognized member of the organization.
- Have a 2.5 GPA and be currently enrolled in more than 11 semester hours or may be senior enrolled in their final term and have fewer than 12 hours.
- Go above and beyond their duties of being a member or officer.
- Represent qualities of an exemplary leader – dedication, hardworking, integrity, honor and a demonstrated visionary, always looking out for the best interest of their organization.
- How do this person’s actions resemble the leadership of the person for whom this award is named?
