The Stephen Lee Gayle Memorial Scholarship

Stephen Lee Gayle was born and raised in Stafford County,VA. He became a lifetime member of the White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad (WOVRS) in 2010, and dedicated over two decadesas a volunteer helping area residents. After his unexpected passing in June of 2011, WOVRS decided to create this scholarship to honor his memory. Two studentswill be selected from Stafford County High Schoolsto be the recipients, each in the amount of $500. Applicants must be high school seniors planning to attend college, trade/technical school, or who will continuetheir education in the field of EMS. Preferential selection will be given to applicants who have completed coursework in EMT-B, and who will qualify to participate in the State Examination. A high school transcript, verification of eligibility to participate in the State exam (if applicable), and 300+ word essay about the importance of public service are required. A letter of recommendation is optional. Applications are available through your school’s counseling center,and the postmark deadline is Friday, April20, 2018.

Thank you for your interest in the Stephen Lee Gayle Memorial Scholarship, which celebrates the life of one of our Volunteers. Mr. Gayle was a lifetime resident of Stafford County, having graduated in 1974 from Stafford Senior High School. He became a career EMT, and volunteered over two decades of service to the White Oak Volunteer Rescue Squad (WOVRS). He was well known in the White Oak Area as gentle and compassionate man, who was more interested in helping others than in material gain. This scholarship, which bears his name, is designed in particular to recognize students who understand the importance of public service, and who have a willingness to want to “Serve Proudly.”

In fairness to all applicants, we will not consider any applications postmarked after April 20, 2018. WOVRS will award two$500 scholarships this year to two students from Stafford County Public High Schools:

1. Applicants must be high school seniors planning to attend a college, trade/technical school, or who will continue their education in the field of EMS.

2. The application must be completed in full; incomplete applications will not be eligible for consideration.

3. Preferential selection will be given to applicants who have completed coursework in EMT-B, and who will qualify to participate in the State Examination.

4. A high school transcript, verification of eligibility to participate in the State exam (if applicable), and 300+ word essay about the importance of public service are required. No more than two letters of recommendation will be also accepted.

5. Both recipients will be asked to attend the Annual Squad Banquet, which will be held on 9 June, 2018.

6. Applications must be postmarked by April 20, 2018.
