Becoming Ethical:
A parallel, political journey with men who have abused
with Alan Jenkins
May 10 & 11, 2010 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Room Seven (6th Floor)
The Stanley A. Milner Library 7-Sir Winston Churchill Square
Edmonton, Alberta
In this workshop, Alan Jenkins will discuss effective intervention with men who have enacted violence and abusive behaviour. Alan believes we can embark upon a parallel ethical journey which strives for fairness, accountability and avoids the reproduction of violence in this work. We can support men to discover their own ethical preferences and develop means of restitution which are accountable to family and community.
This two day workshop centres on the application of invitational practice in the context of relationships, family and community. Invitational practice is based on a political understanding of abusive behaviour and its effects, drawing on the writings of Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault.
The workshop will focus on the nature of restoration in the aftermath of abuse. Alan will critique popular ideas concerning remorse, apology, forgiveness and reconciliation, whilst highlighting possibilities for ethical practices of restorative action.
Practical approaches to creating ethical relationships andfamily and community intervention will be outlined and demonstrated with a specific focus upon:
- facing shame without shaming
- moving from ethical realisation to restitution
- determining respectful forms of connection which are accountable
- finding integrity through ethical action
