ACADEMY OF DIVING TRUST NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN DIVING (FOUNDATION) 2017

TRAINING PROVIDER

Academy of Diving Trust is registered as a Private Training Establishment by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and has approval to sub-contract to this delivery site.

Academy of Diving Trust is accredited to provide education and training and has consent to assessunit standards on the Directory of Assessment Standards within theNew ZealandQualifications Framework (NZQF) in a range of subject areas.

PRE-REQUISITES, CONDITIONS AND PROGRAMME INCLUSIONS

Before commencing this training students must have:

·  passed a current diving medical undertaken by a medical practitioner appropriately trained in underwater medicine. This medical must remain valid for the duration of the course of study.

·  obtained a School Exemption if under 16 years of age at commencement of training.

Students are required to have the following essential tools of trade at course commencement:

·  Wetsuit, Weightbelt, Booties, Gloves, Hood & Gear Bag

·  Snorkel System

·  Surface Signalling Device, Compass & Line Cutting Tool

Students who own their own equipment may need to check with the Facility Manager to ensure it is safe and of reasonable quality before the course commences.

Equipment may be acquired by students on a lease or hire purchase basis from the facility.

Further course related tools of trade will be supplied for the duration of the student’s study, namely:

·  Scuba System including Alternate Air Device

Note for students who intend to enter into further education in the dive industry:

Students will need to have attained the age of 18 years before they are able to be certified as a “Divemaster” (or industry equivalent). Students who are under 18 years are therefore aware that the above certification will not be available until the age criteria is met.

A pre-requisite for being certified as a “Divemaster” (or industry equivalent) is that the candidate must have a recognised qualification covering First Aid and CPR.

PROGRAMME COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

Management reserves the right to not offer enrolment to applicants who have not demonstrated their intention or commitment to complete the course of study.

Students are required to attend all sessions and must make up any areas where attendance was not recorded due to illness or other reasons. Some areas of the practical work may incur additional costs if done outside normal working hours. Students not completing any area of a particular course will not gain a pass or receive credits until the work is completed within a preset time-frame (see opportunity for re-assessment).

Grades for all theory work are subject to a pass or fail system graded by the individual tutor. Grades for the practical work are subject to assessment by the tutor and are based on individual student performance in the area being assessed.

Dates for any off-site components will be discussed during the programme with attendance being compulsory for assessment of final outcomes. Any change in dates will be brought to the student’s attention as required.

All areas of practical work are to be completed by students before final assessment will occur. If for any reason students cannot complete a particular practical component they must arrange for an alternative date or time to make up the practical area before the end of the course (unless an alternative can be arranged with the Facility Manager).

When an examiner is issuing an agency certification, there may be a requirement for extra practical work to meet international training standards. Students requiring extra practical work may incur additional costs. Any additional costs will be determined by the Facility Manager.

GRADUATE INFORMATION

Graduates need to be aware that on gaining employment in the dive industry, employers may require employees to own a full set of dive equipment. Depending on personal choice and the employer's requirements this could be a cost of between $1500.00 to $3000.00 or more.

It is a requirement of the Occupational Safety and Health Service (OSH) of the Department of Labour for all those in employment in New Zealand as divers (occupational divers) to have a Certificate of Competency.

Divers are required to successfully pass an occupational diver medical examination conducted by a Designated Diving Doctor in order to gain the Certificate of Competency. Depending on arrangements with the employer this may be at partial or total cost to the employee.

We advise that all students intending to pursue paid employment in the diving industry in New Zealand should obtain an occupational diver medical examination to ensure that they are medically fit to be approved for employment in the industry, prior to embarking on any programme that will be a pathway to dive employment. We strongly recommend that students intending to study at "Divemaster or equivalent" or above must be satisfied that they can meet the OSH compliance.

OPPORTUNITY FOR RE-ASSESSMENT

Academy of Diving Trust’s policy on Re-Assessment is as follows:

·  Students who fail to reach standards required for a particular course component have seven (7) days in which to apply to the Facility Manager for re-assessment.

·  Students may apply for as long or as many times as necessary to meet the standards required.

·  Students may incur additional costs for re-assessment depending upon areas where re-assessment is required. Costs will be set by Facility Manager and fully discussed with students before commencing re-assessment.

·  Re-assessment is at the discretion of the Facility Manager.

·  Students may incur additional costs for re-evaluation of agency certifications.

CREDIT TRANSFER

All unit standards achieved will be recorded on the student’s individual Record of Learning on the National Qualifications Framework. The cost for this is included in the programme fee. This Record of Learning is fully transferable to any learning organisation in New Zealand.

Students are advised to ensure that their Record of Learning from NZQA (complimentary copy sent from NZQA early each year) includes all unit standards achieved in this course of study.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (CURRENT COMPETENCY)

ADVANTAGES OF RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) acknowledges learning from other courses and qualifications, life experiences, work experiences, training courses and workshops, and measures it against the requirements of the programme in which the student is enrolled.

An applicant can be awarded credit for a unit standard where it can be satisfactorily demonstrated that their prior learning reaches the standard required and that current competency can be demonstrated.

Due to stringent safety criteria within the Diving Industry, applicants seeking RPL for diving unit standards are required to demonstrate current practical and theoretical competency.

It is important for the student to apply for RPL if they think that they have already learned the material to be covered by this programme. The advantages are:

·  The student can identify if his/her experience is similar to that needed for the programme.

·  If the student is credited for parts of the programme, these aspects will not have to be repeated. This will give the student more time to concentrate on other aspects of the programme.

·  Students can therefore learn units which are new and challenging, rather than going over old ground.

EVIDENCE OF PRIOR LEARNING AND DEMONSTRATION OF CURRENT COMPETENCY

There are five ways to prove prior learning and current competency:

·  Attestation: This means that an authoritative person attests or confirms the

learning. Usually at an interview.

·  Challenge: This means that prior learning is tested. This could be by a

practical, oral or written test.

·  Portfolio: A portfolio is a compilation of evidence related to the learning

outcomes of the programme the student is seeking credit for.

·  Credit Transfer: Credit is granted for courses or programmes taught elsewhere,

and is the same as the unit standard for which the student is seeking credit, and current competency can be demonstrated.

·  Assessment interview: Prior learning and current competency is assessed at an

interview with an assessor.

APPLICATION FOR RPL

Students who may be eligible for RPL, or are interested in applying for RPL, should talk to the tutor or the Facility Manager.

The National Certificate in Diving (Foundation) is comprised of three courses. If a student can provide evidence to qualify for total Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for a complete course, the student will not be expected to enrol in or pay for that course offered within the programme.

Application for RPL will be considered when an application is made in writing, complete with first generation evidence. Applications for RPL will only be accepted if made prior to commencement of study.

PROGRAMME FEES

There will be a cost for tuition. This programme is subsidised by the Ministry of Education by way of a Government Tuition Subsidy. To be eligible for the subsidy the student must be a NZ citizen, or have permanent residency in New Zealand.

CONTINUING DIVER CERTIFICATION PROGRESSION

This programme is made up largely of components that are assessed against the above listed unit standards from the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). To gain industry recognition through a certification agency there may be a requirement for extra practical work to meet international training standards.

While students will gain experience through unit standard delivery and assessment, equivalent agency certifications will be issued at the discretion of the delivery site, limited to those areas where all requirements can be met.

Beyond the programme duration, graduates will be able to draw on the experience they have gained through unit standard delivery and assessment, and apply that experience towards meeting the requirements for further agency certifications at their own cost.
