The SpearfishRamsstarted in 2009 with 19 players, then grew to 49 playerswith 3 cheerleaders in 2010, to over 100 players and30 cheerleaders the past two seasons! We currently support three divisions with players ranging in age from 6-12 years old.If they qualify, based on age and weight, some participants are allowed to play down on younger teams. These players are called Older/Lighters. Each team is limited to 5 O/L players, so they are determined on a first-come, first-serve basis. For safety purposes, the Black Hills Youth Football League also implements the Lineman Eligible Rule. This means that if an athlete weighs more than the set weight limit for that division, then he/she will automatically be assigned a playing position on the line between the tackles, both on offense and defense. One initial weigh-in will occur at the beginning of the season to determine eligibility levels.

(Mitey Mite teams arecomprised of 1st and 2nd grade players.)
(Junior PeeWee teams consist of 3rd and 4th grade players.)
(PeeWee teams include 5th and 6thplayers.)

The Spearfish Rams' players are from Spearfish, Whitewood, Sturgis, Belle Fourche, Deadwood, Lead, Sundance, Beulah, and Aladdin, WY. We are a part of the Black Hills Youth Football League, which is based out of Rapid City.We are a competitive league with gamesbeing played on100 yard regulation fields with goalposts, announcers, 3 referees per game, etc.. We play games on Saturdays at the following locations:Vandenberg Elementary in Boxelder, Wall High School, Belle Fourche Middle School, St. Thomas More High School, Woodle Field in Sturgis, North Middle School/Southwest Middle School in Rapid City, Sioux Park, and Lyle Hare Stadium at BHSU.New expansion teams are currently being formed in Lead-Deadwood and Custer. Registration fees for new football players are $215, with returning player fees set at $200. Sibling discounts and military discounts are available, as well as scholarships, for those who qualify. We have enjoyed much success throughout the past 4 years. Some titles that our teams are proud to own include 2009 and 2011 Division Champions and 2010-2011-2012 Super Bowl Champions. One team even traveled to Omaha, Nebraska in 2011 to participate in the East Meets West Football Classic. They came home with a 2-0 record, beating tough teams from Lincoln and Omaha.

Our coaching staff is certified and offers much knowledge and experience to our players. We attribute much of our success to our 5:1 player/coach ratio.

The cheerleaders are led by Brenda Key, with the help of many assistants. They continue to see much growth and are a valuable asset to our entire Spearfish Rams’ organization. Cheerleading registration fees are $110, plus the price of uniforms. Fundraising efforts are currently underway to offset some of these uniform costs.

Equipment check-out will be on Sunday, July 21 and another date that is yet to be determined. This allows players time to adjust to their helmets, pads, etc.. Practices begin on August 5 at the Spearfish Rams’ Field, which is located adjacent to the Dog Park on State Street. Practice times are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:00-7:00. The regular season runs through October, with the post-season wrapping up by mid-November.
