Twenty ninTH Sunday in ordinary time OCTOBER 19, 2014
A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Parishioners,
The Synod taking place in Rome, which I wrote about last week, issued a statement which caused quite a stir during this past week. Some of the words in the statement can almost be understood to condone cohabitation; merely civil marriage for Catholics; openness for sacraments for the divorced and remarried and homosexual relations. Many people, including myself, were surprised and even shocked at the media reports of the change in the attitude of the Church, but several things bear stating.
First, the way the news media reports many things, especially things regarding the Catholic Church, is sensationalistic. In other words, the media wants to make a strong impression in a few words in order to make people think things are dramatically changing (to the way the media wants them to be). The statement of the Synod is more balanced but still open to misunderstanding.
After there was considerable concern expressed among faithful, church going Catholics, the “Synod Fathers,” as the Bishops in charge are called, issued a clarification stating Church teaching has not changed. Homosexual actions are still considered sinful and sexual relations are reserved to marriage between one man and one woman. True, the Synod has agreed to discusshow to respond to modern situations and is urging Catholics to respect homosexuals and everyone in whatever situation they are in, but certain truths and teachings will never change.
As I asked last week, please pray for the Synod and for the Church and the World. Sometimes even good intentions, like the intentions behind the Synod, can lead people to read too much into words and actions without nuance. There is a week left until the end of this Synod and a year of discussion before next year’s continuation of the Synod. Pray for clarity but also be ready for misunderstanding.Christ is the head of the Church but since the Church is made up of human beings, things will not be perfect on earth. We trust that Jesus will lead us to truth.
Sincerely in Christ,
World MISSION SUNDAY

Voting and moral responsibility
Election Day is Coming—Make Sure to Vote as a Catholic
We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity meaningfully to participate in building the culture of life. Every voice matters in the public forum. Your vote counts. Please exercise that power in ways that defend human life, especially those of God’s children, unborn, disabled or otherwise vulnerable.
ANOINTING MASS AT ST. PAUL’S
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25TH -12 NOON
All are Welcome!
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sickis a beautiful gift from God. It is a sacrament that is administered to a Catholic ”who, having reached the age of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age.” It is a sacrament which provides comfort, peace, courage and, if the sick person is unable to make confession, even forgives sin.
Whenever new illness develops or first illness relapses or worsens, the person may receive the sacrament a further time. It may also be given numerous times in the case of old age or chronic illness based on the pastoral judgment of the priest. This is not to be confused with what we traditionally refer to as the “Last Rites” which involves a three-part reception of the sacraments of Anointing, Penance and the Holy Eucharist or Viaticum.
