The Six Kingdoms Research ProjectName: ______

Purpose:

This project is designed to help you discover the six different kingdoms that scientist use to classify organisms, and understand the unique characteristics of that kingdom. We will take 3 days in class to allow for research, questions, organization, and construction of your project. You should work on the rest at home. The project is due at the beginning of the class Wednesday, September 30.

Research:

Use your reading packet, notes from class, books from the library, and selected websites to research what the six kingdoms are and each kingdoms characteristics. Some good questions to ask during research might be:

  • What is the name of this kingdom?
  • Where did the name come from/what does the name mean?
  • How are organisms in this kingdom organized at the cellular level? (How many cells, do the cells have a nucleus, do the cells have a cell wall?)
  • How does it get its energy (how does it eat)? How does it maintain homeostasis?
  • Do the organisms reproduce sexually or asexually?
  • How do organisms in this kingdom “do” the other characteristics of life – growth, movement, respond to their environment, etc.?
  • What are some examples of organisms in this kingdom?
  • What are some interesting or unique facts about this kingdom?

Write down ALL your research notes on ONE sheet. Organize your research in a way that makes sense to you, and that will help you put together your presentation (you may use the provided notes sheet). Get the teacher’s signature for your research before you move on to any other part of your project. Research notes will be worth 15 points.

Construction:

Using all the information you gathered in your research, you will be making a Six Kingdoms Booklet. This booklet should have a cover page, contain one page per kingdom, and a citations page.

Coverpage 1page 2 page 3 page 4 page 5page 6citations

Please use either white computer paper or construction paper to create this booklet. Staple the booklet in the upper left-hand corner. The cover page should include the title, your name, the date, and the class. The citation page should say “works cited” at the top then list the places you got your information in alphabetical order. See the attached sheet for an example page.

Citation:

Be sure that you site your research in the appropriate way. You should always try to include the author, title, date, and location of source, but the more information you can get, the better. Use KnightCite to help you:

***IF YOU COPY DIRECTLY FROM A TEXT, PUT IT IN QUOTATIONS AND WRITE THE DATE AND AUTHOR OF THE SOURCE IN PARENTHESES AND ON THE WORKS CITED PAGE ex. “Use KnightCite to help you” (Adams, 2009). ***IF YOU SUMMARIZE FROM A SOURCE, BE SURE YOU CHANGE IT INTO YOUR OWN WORDING AND CITE THE SOURCE ON THE WORKS CITED PAGE.

Any plagiarism (taking someone else’s work or ideas and claiming them as your own) will result in an automatic 0 on your project.

Grading:

The project is due on Wednesday, September 30 at the beginning of the class period.

Points:

Research notes……………….15 points

Final Project…………………..60 points (see rubric for further break down)

Total……………………………..75 points
